12 years on, people ask: how can we follow the path the Pope is calling us to? For parishes, communities and the curious, I have written a retreat “with” Francis, based on the Ignatian Exercises which shaped him. In English, español, français, italiano and português.
US President Donald Trump finished his midterm campaigning with a speech outside the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington DC. Read more: bbc.in/4zyN8FF
People said the same when Benedict XVI published his Jesus trilogy under the name Jospeh Ratzinger because, he said, he was writing as a theologian not as pope. People said you can't make that distinction. Of course you can.
Harsh words here:
“The Pope’s choice to vote in the US midterms makes it more than fair to wonder how well he has understood who he is and what he is in his new office.”
I disagree with this post very profoundly. The papacy is an office, a mission. It is NOT like an hereditary monarchy, and the arguments from that analogy fail entirely.
In his superb essay on Substack, substack.com/@michaelfoxcate… is right: @BishopBarron’s argument is not with Card Aguiar, Card Vesco or with me, but with papal teaching.
“What Bishop Barron objects to is the condition that …Pope Paul VI placed on that work: the Church brings people to Christ by becoming the kind of community in which Christ can be seen. The condition falls on Catholics first, before it falls on anyone Catholics hope to convert.”
The Trappist Martyrs of Algeria famously committed themselves to friendship w & service to their Muslim neighbors. Inspired by their approach & 1996 martyrdom, Cdl Vesco volunteered to be a missionary to Algeria in 2002. @BishopBarron has a nice ‘11 video lauding the Trappists
On Barron/Vesco, easy to guess where our missionary pope stands. “The great missionaries bear witnesses to quiet, unobtrusive approaches, whose method is the sharing of life, selfless service, the renunciation of any calculated strategy, dialogue and respect,” Leo said in April.
NEW: Detroit Archbishop Edward Weisenburger, an ally of Pope Leo XIV, stood on a sidewalk in Clark Park on Friday holding a sign that read “Todos Somos Familia,” after days of reports that ICE agents were targeting the city’s immigrant neighborhoods.
“I don’t really believe in a polite religion that maintains the status quo for people in power,” he told the Detroit Free Press.
The vigil came eight days after twelve American bishops prayed over President Trump in the Oval Office, a moment the White House filmed and posted online. thelettersfromleo.com/p/detr…
If anyone is struggling to understand how Card Vesco's comments fit with the Great Commission, here's a section from Venite ad Me. Conversion is not our power, but Christ's. Evangelization channels Christ's love.
The journalists who interviewed Cardinal Vesco say @BishopBarron left out important context and attributed words to the cardinal that he never said. We’ve translated @cathobel’s response into English.

Cardinal Vesco: “La force de François, c’était son imprévisibilité et la force de Léon, c’est sa prévisibilité. Mais ces deux hommes au caractère complètement différent vont dans la même direction…”
Card Vesco is right. The Church evangelizes, but it’s Christ who converts. As Benedict XVI said, the Church does not engage in proselytism but grows by attraction. Leo describes proselytism as a temptation. Francis said those who proselytise are pagans dressed as Christians.

Cardinal Vesco says Catholic Church is ‘not there to convert’ in interview on evangelisation
Cardinal Jean-Paul Vesco has said the Church is “not there to convert”, arguing that proselytism is “poison” and that Christians should approach other religions through fraternity rather than seeking conversions
