This is an odd spot for Iowa State because the earliest they've lost under Otz before tonight was Nov. 24 (2024 vs VCU.)
That defensive performance was nowhere near good enough. Only four steals, slow rotations, got blown by on the perimeter in several key spots. That's pretty concerning.
However, a few things can be true. We typically never really see Iowa State get tested in any way before Thanksgiving. I'm sure if you go back and watch some early cupcake games of past years, all of those same issues show up but the Grambling State's and IUPUI's of the world aren't good enough to capitilize.
That wasn't the case. It seemed like Memphis made Iowa State pay for almost every mistake, especially in crunch time. Kudos to them, but also very disappointing for Iowa State.
Now, what does that mean? Is that who this team is? I really don't think so. I've publicly said that I think this will be Otz' best defensive team and I stand by that. But they've got a long ways to go.
The scramble defense takes lazer focus 100% of the time. When a trap doesn't "get home," teams get open threes. Iowa State wasn't good enough in the emergency rotations or backside rebounding. The hope would be that those issues get sorted out as they play together more, find roles and get weathered.
Certainly a very disappointing start to the season and there will rightfully be concerns until this team plays San Diego State in three weeks.
