Today, we’re sharing a difficult update. OpenBB is winding down as a company. At the same time, we are committing to release the OpenBB product suite under a permissive open-source license.
That includes OpenBB Workspace, OpenBB Copilot, OpenBB Excel Add-in, and Open Data Platform.
OpenBB began as an open-source project built to give people and firms more control over their investment-research environments. Over the past five years, it grew into products used across financial data, research workflows, AI, and an ecosystem of applications created by our partners and community.
We were not able to build a sustainable business around that vision. But the technology the team built should not disappear.
The open-source releases will allow developers, data providers, individuals, and financial institutions to use, modify, deploy, and build on the OpenBB stack. We are still finalizing the release order, license details, repository structure, and long-term stewardship of each project. We will share more as that work is completed.
To every customer, contributor, partner, investor, and former teammate: thank you. You shaped OpenBB and helped create work that will continue beyond the company.

Today is bittersweet.
After almost six years, we are winding down OpenBB.
I started it over Christmas 2020 with a simple idea: firms and individuals should own the platform where they do research and make decisions.
We didn't find PMF to make it a sustainable business.
But the vision is inevitable, and what our team built deserves to keep existing.
So we're open-sourcing the entire OpenBB product suite under a permissive license.
I wrote more about it here: openbb.co/blog/openbb-belong…
(the picture was taken the first time I met my parents-in-law, which coincides with when Gamestonk Terminal went first viral and I spent all my time fixing/improving it)

In 2024, we built OpenBB Workspace Pro for firms that need enterprise infrastructure.
Along the way, we kept meeting another kind of team: family offices, boutique funds, emerging managers, all with a real need to distribute analytics and AI workflows, but not looking for a massive commitment.
So today we’re introducing OpenBB Workspace Lite.
A self-hosted edition of Workspace for small teams that want to combine their data, distribute it among colleagues, and run AI agents on top, without the enterprise overhead.
No sales calls, no procurement cycle. Subscribe today, run it in your own environment, and your team is working with it this week.

Lite offers the same core Workspace experience as Pro:
- Same data connectivity
- Same AI integration
- Same collaborative capabilities
What's different is the infrastructure layer underneath, sized for teams that don't need SSO, multi-entity support, or the cloud-native database and object storage layer that Pro runs on.

Because the AI agents connected to the OpenBB Workspace can read every table, chart, and dashboard as context, the app is AI-ready out of the box.

Your team already has applications that do real work. Streamlit dashboards, internal portfolio tools, risk monitor apps. The new OpenBB iframe widget lets you bring those applications into OpenBB Workspace without rebuilding them from scratch.
In the video, a Streamlit portfolio app runs directly inside Workspace, feeling like a native part of the workspace.
The app can also:
→ Receive shared dashboard parameters, such as tickers, dates, and filters
→ Send its data into standalone Workspace widgets
→ Refresh its UI after an agent triggers a state-changing action
→ Connect MCP tools automatically, giving OpenBB Copilot or another agent access to the app’s data and actions
So your team can keep the app it knows, while adding shared dashboards and an agent that can work with the underlying workflow.
Try it now for free with the Community Edition.

Workspace 6.0 is live today. Our MCP is now hosted inside the Workspace, so you no longer have to run it locally to plug in external agents like Claude Code, Codex, or Cursor.
Connect through a hosted MCP endpoint, manage personal access tokens within the Workspace, and the bridge handles status and automatic reconnection for you.
Wire your agents into the Workspace and let them work directly on your data and dashboards.

So I just made a demo talking about how you can use Databricks data from OpenBB and how you can use your agents to work with it.
Let me know what you think!
PS: I lost my camera mid-demo, but sound works lol

Terrapin is now live on the OpenBB App Marketplace 🎉
With the Muni Bond Lookup app, fixed income teams can search US muni bonds, drill into any ISIN for reference data, cashflows, pricing history, documents, and market stats, and keep that entire workflow inside OpenBB instead of juggling external screens.
Open the Marketplace tab, connect Terrapin, and start pulling muni detail straight into your dashboards.
