𝗣𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗮𝗺 𝗔𝗹𝗲𝗿𝘁 - 𝐏𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬 Our detectives are investigating reports of telephone scams targeting community members where scammers use high-pressure tactics to make victims immediately withdraw money from their bank accounts. In some recent cases, victims received calls from someone claiming to be an employee with their bank’s fraud department. Additionally, the caller ID on the victims’ phones displayed the same number as the victim’s bank card. The suspect then tells the victims that someone used their debit card and was trying to access their savings accounts as well. They then demand that victims withdraw money from their account and send ride share services to the victim’s home to retrieve the money. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗥𝘂𝗹𝗲: Financial institutions will NEVER call you to demand immediate payment over the phone or in-person or to move money to another account to protect it. Scammers thrive on fear and urgency. Watch out for these warning signs: 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘆𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, especially via untraceable methods such as gift cards, cryptocurrency, or wire transfers or by way of a ride share service sent to your home. 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘀: They may threaten you with "immediate arrest" if you hang up. 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘆: They will tell you not to talk to family, friends, or even your financial institution. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 "𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗲" 𝗧𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰: They keep you on the phone, so you don't have time to think or call for help. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 If you receive a suspicious call, follow these steps to stay in control: 𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗣. 𝗕𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗛𝗘. 𝗗𝗢𝗡’𝗧 𝗣𝗔𝗡𝗜𝗖. Scammers want you to act emotionally. Taking a 10-second pause can break their spell. 𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗜𝗦𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗣𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗦𝗨𝗥𝗘. A legitimate legal issue will rarely, if ever, require a split-second financial decision. 𝗧𝗔𝗞𝗘 𝗡𝗢𝗧𝗘𝗦 & 𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗚 𝗨𝗣. Note the caller's name and what they claimed. Then, end the call. 𝗚𝗘𝗧 𝗛𝗘𝗟𝗣. Call a trusted family member or friend who can help you get the answers you need. 𝗞𝗘𝗘𝗣 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗜𝗡𝗙𝗢 𝗣𝗥𝗜𝗩𝗔𝗧𝗘. Never give out your Social Security number, bank details, or passwords to an unsolicited caller. 𝗥𝗘𝗣𝗢𝗥𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗜𝗡𝗖𝗜𝗗𝗘𝗡𝗧. If you are a victim of a scam or have experienced a scam attempt, report it to your local police department or financial institution.
