Most magnet makers buy alloy flake from third parties and start there. $MP makes the alloy in-house, directly downstream of our metal production capability. That creates a direct link from Mountain Pass to magnet manufacturing and allows us to optimize chemistry and microstructure across the process, rather than simply accepting whatever feedstock is available. Vertical integration is an engineering advantage.

A magnet factory here called Independence represents the Western Hemisphere’s biggest bet challenging China’s dominance in the rare-earth metals needed to make motors for electric vehicles. General Motors is preparing to take its first deliveries from the plant, a milestone more than five years in the making. GM’s partnership with the plant’s owner, MP Materials, was a byproduct of chaos. The back-to-back shocks of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent semiconductor shortage upended auto production worldwide, prompting GM to reevaluate how it sources vital components. As a result, the automaker sought to shift from a procurement strategy heavily reliant on globalization to one with a more regional focus. The goal is to “buy where you build,” Shilpan Amin, the automaker’s global chief procurement and supply chain officer, told reporters at a tour of MP Materials’ 250,000-square-foot facility here. #GM #GeneralMotors #China #automotive #autoindustry

If you know, you know. This week, $MP welcomed Munro Live to Independence for an inside look at the world's only fully integrated rare earth metal-to-magnet manufacturing facility. Few teams know engineering and manufacturing better. We can’t wait to see what they captured!
This week, the Munro team visited @MPMaterials Fort Worth, Texas facility to see how rare earth magnets are made and learn more about their partnership with @GM to supply magnets for EV motors. More from our visit coming soon!

"MP also announced a new agreement with an undisclosed large aerospace and defense contractor worth hundreds of millions to provide it with gadolinium. That’s a so-called heavier rare-earth metal that ends up in high-performance alloys for jet engines and lasers, among other applications." 👇 barrons.com/articles/mp-mate…

Rare earths are no longer just a niche mining story. They sit at the centre of some of the most important trends shaping the global economy, from electric vehicles and robotics to AI infrastructure, drones and defence systems. Yet the real challenge is not simply finding these materials. It is building the supply chains needed to process them and turn them into the products modern industry depends on. In this episode of The Next Big Thing, @MobeenTahirWT speaks with Ryan Corbett, Chief Financial Officer of @MPMaterials, about the race to rebuild rare earth supply chains. We explore China's dominance across mining, refining and magnet production, why NdPr is emerging as a critical bottleneck, and why demand is broadening well beyond electric vehicles. The conversation also examines the role of industrial policy, supply chain security and vertical integration in building a resilient materials ecosystem.
