Ontario-made AI is helping save lives in our hospitals.
At St. Michael's Hospital, a team at
@UnityHealthTO, led by Dr. Amol Verma, built CHARTWatch, an AI early-warning system for hospital patients.
CHARTWatch reads more than 100 details already in a patient's health record, from their medical history to how they're doing right now, and tracks how those details change in real time. When it spots someone at high risk of getting so sick they could need the ICU, it sends an alert. The care team acts quickly: senior staff assess the patient right away, and nurses check on them every 1 to 2 hours.
Nurses see the difference. Since they started using it, nurse team leader Alicia Feruelo at St. Joseph's Health Centre says, "I could only remember one transfer to ICU."
The results are clear: a study in the Canadian Medical Association Journal found 26% fewer unexpected deaths on St. Michael's general medicine ward after CHARTWatch was introduced.
Under the leadership of Premier
@fordnation, we're backing Ontario's researchers, hospitals and innovators, so made-in-Ontario AI like CHARTWatch can show the world what's possible.
