When I wrote this, I said the hardest part of gold's correction might already be behind us.
This week gold came back down to its 20-month average for the first time in three years. During the whole rally it never touched that average once, so this is where what I said here really gets tested.
As long as gold holds above it, I still read the last few months as a correction inside a bigger uptrend. If it can't, the correction is deeper than I thought and I'll change my view.
I wouldn't read too much into one weekly candle, though. What I want to see is how gold closes the month around this average.
Gold’s price is getting most of the attention today, but I’m more interested in the gap between spot and futures.
Spot is now trading at its widest relative discount to futures since the ATH. That doesn’t mean gold is cheap in absolute terms. It means futures have moved faster while spot hasn’t fully followed.
I wouldn’t call that a buy signal yet. The gap can close with futures pulling back just as easily as it can with spot catching up.
What I want to see is spot begin closing that gap from below. That would be the more bullish confirmation.
Still, it supports what I said earlier: the hardest part of gold’s correction may already be behind us.
