The COP Presidency has proposed a global goal of increasing electrification’s share of final energy demand to 35% by 2035, up from 23% today. Countries should sign up to this target and commit to publish credible electrification and clean energy roadmaps. Clement Perry, Global Lead, Clean Energy Supply for @WRIEnergy gives examples how we can meet this goal. More issues to watch leading up to #COP31: go.wri.org/cop31-seconds

Data centers use a lot of energy. How can we keep it clean? One method is by enabling direct procurement of clean energy. This means creating an optimal policy environment for data centers to partner with clean energy developers to produce solar, wind and battery storage solutions that can flexibly and reliably power their facilities. Another tool is demand-side flexibility. If data centers can moderate their energy use during heat waves and other times of peak grid stress, the whole system can benefit from their flexibility (in some cases, preventing you from having to turn your own AC off). By reducing this peak in energy use, fewer high-emitting power plants are needed to meet the grid's needs. Finally, clean firm power sources, like geothermal, can be a valuable piece of the equation to provide constant clean energy to data centers. 🌊COP31 provides an opportunity to finally harness the ocean’s potential for climate action. Research shows that ocean-based climate action— such as expanding offshore renewables or restoring mangroves — could provide up to 35% of the emissions cuts needed to hold global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees C. Sustainable ocean industries could create 51 million jobs over the next 20 years. Tom Pickerell Global Director of @WRIOcean shares 3 areas WRI would like to see progress at COP31. The global economy remains dangerously vulnerable to fossil fuel disruptions. #COP31 offers an opportunity to turn this latest fossil fuel shock into a catalyst for more resilient energy systems. Dr Nick Wayth, Global Director of @WRIEnergy tells us how countries can advance a number of actions at COP31 that, if acted on by governments, would help shift the world toward cleaner, more secure energy. Despite how much we all depend on forests, grasslands, peatlands and coastal wetlands, global efforts to conserve these ecosystems and the species that live in them are largely going backward. Reversing course will require protecting, restoring and sustainably managing terrestrial ecosystems, alongside tackling other drivers of biodiversity loss, including pollution, overexploitation, and invasive alien species. 🔻🌳The world's remaining intact forest landscapes are shrinking. What's causing it? From 2000 to 2013, timber harvesting was the primary cause of reduction. Yet since 2020, fire has become the leading driver. How can we protect these unique forests? Find out: go.wri.org/intact-forests-tw

We’ve teamed up with IKEA Foundation for this year’s IKEA Foundation Week campaign, Can You Save the Tomato?, to help people rethink food. In the campaign, our colleague Dr Susan Chomba explains how the way we produce, distribute and consume food affects our climate, and shares solutions to reduce waste and emissions. Hear from Susan and see if you can save the tomato at SaveTheTomato.org. #IFW26

Local priorities should be central to data center development. The local impacts of data centers have taken center stage in U.S. media as people are eager to protect their communities from irresponsible water use, climbing electricity prices and pollution. Many communities with data centers in their backyard are already facing above-average environmental burdens. But data centers can support local communities with early engagement and community benefits agreements (CBAs).
