“This is an absolutely stunning book. A must-read for any college football fan” —Paul Finebaum (@finebaum) I've been slow rolling the publication of my book: American Odyssey: A Journey into the Heart of the Revolution in College Football, but the moment is here Years of work, the entire purpose of 5th Down CFB, and it's come to pass. All of the support has been amazing, and what a ride it's been, so thank you to all of you for being part of the journey I might finally replace my pinned post! 😂🫡🇺🇸

If you love #collegefootball buy Mark’s book. Very few love the game like he does.

The Big Ten (and its old running mate, the PCC/Pac-10, rip) has gone its own way many times in the past Whether it was refusing to give pure athletic scholarships in the 1940s-50s, giving fewer scholarships than other schools in the 50s-60s, or declining to join the CFA 1978-1997, (the group that sued the NCAA for TV rights and won), the Big Ten's faculty and presidents have never shied away from this kind of action Seems clear they believe the Protect Act is going to pass
The Big Ten has now adopted a rule limiting schools to a total of $49 million in institutional NIL/rev share support and a max of $27.5 million in school arranged third-party NIL agreements. These are key components of PCSA and show conference is moving forward regardless.

Attorney Jeff Kessler tells @YahooSports that he's drafting a letter to the Big Ten in regard to its new cap rule that penalizes schools for exceeding a cap on school-affiliated third-party NIL. If the bill doesn’t pass, the league is violating the House settlement, he says.

One of my forecasts from the beginning of this cataclysmic realignment period is that, within a decade or two, the sport would cohere from the top down and reset itself into organized sections I think that's still on the table, despite the fact all these colleges do is compete with each other over everything. There may be enough here for a once in a century group effort
On today’s show, @BarstoolBigCat explained why he’s warming up to the idea of a 24-team College Football Playoff. But since conferences won’t matter anymore, he’d like some tweaks to either bring back or enhance regional rivalries during the season.

Amazing anecdote Boils down to something so simple it's profound: When the fur is flying and the moment becomes the moment, just get it to your best performers and live with the outcome
Nick Saban talking about the first lesson he ever learned as a coach… “When you’re in a critical situation in a game, don’t think of plays, think of players.” ✍🏼

The sequence here is just classic: The NFL's (out of touch) marketing arm recommends the 49ers change their beautiful, beloved "SF" helmets in order to "appeal to more of the Bay Area" The man in charge of the 49ers, also wildly out of touch w/the rank and file, unquestioningly accepts the "expert" advice and plans to make the change In this case, fortunately, the outrage was so explosive that the 49ers backed off the design change—but this is how we end up w/classic uniforms turned into some goofy "modern update" meant to "appeal" to people who don't need to be appealed to For the safekeeping of the game, Uniform Ball Knower needs to be a paid position at every college and professional outfit
In 1991 the 49ers tried to change their logo. Someone said, Imagine being the guy who designed it. He was probably so proud and honored they were gonna use it, just to have the entire fanbase shit on it so hard that they changed their minds in 24 hours. Ouch. Thirty-five years ago, the 49ers unveiled a new logo and helmet design, replacing the iconic “SF” with blocky and outlined text that read “49ers.” Consultants from NFL Properties, the league’s former marketing arm, recommended the switch, saying it would make the franchise more appealing to the entire Bay Area. At the time, 49ers owner Eddie DeBartolo Jr. went along with the idea. The 49ers hadn’t even conducted focus-group testing beforehand. After photos from the news conference hit the newspapers the next day, angry calls bombarded 49ers HQ in Santa Clara. Fan uproar forced the team to reverse course. Six days after the news conference, DeBartolo announced that the 49ers would be reverting to their classic uniforms. One of the two failed helmet prototypes is now in the 49ers Museum at Levi’s Stadium. 📸: Deanne Fitzmaurice

Thanks, Dad ❤️
When #Illini HC Bret Bielema was in high school, he thought he'd play college football at D3 Augustana. But his father, Arnie, encouraged him to chase the biggest opportunities possible. Bielema came home after school and found a letter on his bed from his dad, who passed away this weekend. It said, "What you conceive in your mind and believe in your heart you will achieve." "I tattooed (the quote) on my calf when I was at the University of Iowa," said Bielema. Arnie, who sold sporting goods, used his connections to help get Bret at Iowa football camps and be discovered. Bielema would walk on at Iowa, become a team captain and play in the Rose Bowl. After his collegiate career, he started his coaching career at Iowa. Bielema said, "I just think about where I am now, 56 years of age. The decision he helped me make when I was 18, without helping me make it, he let me kind of come to that decision, has affected my life forever."
