If war history is your thing, what I'm building here with the Battlefield Atlas is going to be huge for your research and terrible for your time management.
The depth that I've built into it is layers past its original design, which was supposed to just map battle locations:
- Primary and alternate locations for battles
- A scoring system for location and unit accuracy to keep it honest
- Terrain modeling of what the ground looked like at the date of the battle (when different) to go alongside the modern map to see the current infrastructure covering it
- Deep sourcing and transparency pages for actual academic research
- Weapons / vehicles used in battles, along with their role specific to the fight
- Significant actions during fights (Medals of Honor)
- Supporting media for each battle (video via Funker530, images)
- Period-accurate (as much as possible) 3D Fortification renderings from period sketches and other sources
- Downloadable KMZ's (paid, this is the core of my work), downloadable source maps (free)
It's honestly becoming my favorite project very quickly. We're up to 107 battles as of today. It'll hit 160 by Veteran's Day.
