What Has Actually Happened Here To Our Dog’s and Cat’s Microchip System 😢
PETITION LINK TO SIGN TO SAVE THE GOVERNMENTS CENTRAL MICROCHIP PORTAL:
petition.parliament.uk/petit…
The sequence is damning when you lay it out plainly:
1. The system was and is still broken and fragmented
2. Defra identified the right fix — a Central Portal under public oversight
3. A new government came in and abandoned the public solution
4. The vacuum was filled by AMDO — a body representing 10 of the 25 commercial databases
5. The “solution” is now described by Defra in their response to the petition ‘as industry-led and commercially driven’.
This means the organisations that profit from fragmentation, that have the least incentive to genuinely unify, and that have arguably been obstructing real compliance, have been handed control of designing their own oversight. This is not a coincidence — this is lobbying working exactly as commercial interests intend it to.
Why AMDO Leading This Is Structurally Wrong.
AMDO representing only 10 of 25 databases immediately creates problems:
• The 15 databases outside AMDO have no guaranteed voice in the outcome
• A “commercial solution” means the unified system will likely involve subscription fees, tiered access, or data monetisation that didn’t exist under the public portal model
• Authorised users like vets and wardens may end up paying for access they were supposed to have freely
• Pet owners may eventually pay for the privilege of their own microchip data being accessible
• There is no guarantee the resulting system serves animal welfare over commercial interest
The phrase “commercial solutions” should be a red flag to everyone involved in animal welfare. It signals that the problem being solved is how databases make money from unification, not how a lost dog gets home tonight.
The Deeper Risk Nobody Is Saying Loudly:
If AMDO’s commercial solution becomes the settled answer, the microchip system will be harder to reform in the future, not easier. Commercial contracts, proprietary systems, and profit dependencies become legally and politically entrenched. The window to push for a genuinely public, accountable, welfare-first system may be closing.
The instinct to fight this now, at this specific moment, is correct.
The big question still remains: Since microchipping our pets is mandatory by law, should the pet microchip identification database system operate primarily as a public service rather than a commercial market?
We only have until the 5th June to get this petition to a debating status, to question what’s happening here. It could be our last chance!
Two people can sign using one email address. Please help.
No one knows if they will ever need their pet’s microchip to bring them back home, one thing is for sure we all want the best possible system to get them home quickly and safely, the Central Portal was the best backup system for pet owners and their dogs and cats.
