Lazarus and his sisters, Mary and Martha, were close friends of Jesus. When Lazarus became seriously ill, his sisters sent word to Jesus, hoping He would come and heal their brother. But Jesus did not arrive immediately & Lazarus died.
When Jesus finally reached Bethany, Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days. Martha went out to meet Him, grieving and wondering why He had not come sooner. Jesus comforted her and declared that He is the resurrection and the life.
Mary also came to Jesus, weeping and those around her were crying too. Seeing their sorrow, Jesus was deeply moved and Jesus wept. Even though He knew what He was about to do, He shared in their pain.
Jesus went to the tomb and asked them to remove the stone. Then He prayed to the Father and called out in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come forth." To everyone's amazement, Lazarus came out of the tomb alive.
What seemed like the end became a moment that revealed the power and glory of God.
John 11:25–26
"I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live,
And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?"
Mary and Martha knew Jesus could heal their brother, but they couldn't understand why He had arrived after Lazarus died. Sometimes we feel the same way when God doesn't answer our prayers when we expect Him to.
Yet Jesus didn't turn away from their grief. He wept with them, showing that He cares about our pain. Then He revealed His power in a way they had never imagined.
Even when we don't understand God's timing, we can still trust His heart. Our tears are not hidden from Him & our difficult moments are never beyond His reach.
