I’m not opposed to statements like this in principle, but the “We’re so back!” reaction to them seems off to me. This statement is supposed to have come from the same pen of the man who just a few days ago was talking on stage about how he had been ogling Nicki Minaj’s butt. Is that what it looks like to be “Guided by an unwavering faith in Jesus Christ… working to restore the moral and religious foundations that have sustained our Republic for generations”? No. The mixed messaging doesn’t actually serve to advance the Christian faith, but to subject it to the scorn of outsiders. Christian theologians who believed it was the magistrates job to promote piety emphasized the fact that he needed to start by modeling it personally. It is not the bare profession of religion which we are after, saying “This is the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord.” That kind of hypocrisy is poison, and yet we’re eager to celebrate it as long as our civil leaders give a performative nod to the holy faith which they contradict by their behavior. In his 1658 sermon admonishing the Commons House of Parliament, John Owen noted that empty profession is not the glory of any nation. “Profession separated from the root from which it ought to spring, is not the glory of any people; Christ is not their glory who are his shame. Empty profession is the shame of Christ in the world, and shall not be others’ glory… But when men profess the truth of Christ, but in their hearts and ways maintain and manifest enmity to the power of that truth, and to all of Christ that is in reality in the world, this is no glory.” Praise God for the reformation. May the glorious doctrines which transformed countless men and women in the 16c continue to transform us today. Those doctrines deserve far more than lip service, they deserve the entirety of our hearts.
Presidential Message on Reformation Day: From the earliest days of our Republic, prayer and faith in Almighty God have stood as the foundation of our strength, the source of our unity, and the fount of our greatness. This Reformation Day, I send my best wishes to the countless Christians across our country commemorating the Protestant Reformation and its enduring message of salvation by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Five hundred years ago, William Tyndale — inspired by the work of Martin Luther — advanced the Protestant Reformation’s devotion to Holy Scripture through the publication of the first New Testament printed in English, shaping the language of the Bibles that would fortify the faith and resolve of America’s founding generation.  The Sacred Scriptures helped form the religious convictions that formed our young Nation’s founding ideals of God-given rights and individual liberty, a spiritual inheritance we honor as we continue to reflect on 250 glorious years of American Independence. The Bible remains a cornerstone of our Nation’s character and upholds our steadfast devotion to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Guided by an unwavering faith in Jesus Christ, my Administration is working to restore the moral and religious foundations that have sustained our Republic for generations. As President, I will always support citizens of faith and defend their place in the public square, honoring the enduring role of our churches in strengthening families, serving communities, and preserving the core values that have anchored us across the centuries. As Christians across our country unite in faith and fellowship this Reformation Day, I send my heartfelt prayers for a meaningful celebration and encourage each of you to draw renewed strength from God’s Word as we carry forward the blessings of faith and freedom throughout our beloved Nation. whitehouse.gov/briefings-sta…

A doctrine you need to spend some time with: mystical union with Christ. His actual life is communicated to us by the Holy Spirit. The same Spirit who anointed his sacred humanity anoints us as well.

Aspray introduces a new approach to investigating the metaphysical presuppositions of the Reformers, challenging the oversimplification that they were captive to nominalism. Vermigli is the test case for the approach. Interesting chapters on his views of justification, the Eucharist, and his political theology.

A good word of warning re law/gospel reductionism from @the_rev_bob
Too often modern Lutheran and Reformed preachers can fall into a kind of law-gospel reductionism, where the gospel is reduced to a get-out-of-jail-free card and the biblical text and the law are ignored. 🎥 Watch the full episode: piped.video/t2yqe3cDSmI

The mark of a great church is not its seating capacity, but its capacity to serve and send. Small or large, faithful churches filled with people who are learning to love God, one another, and their neighbors are called to a posture of service that embraces Christ's mission.
