New lab paper @NeuroCellPress!
@_Aaron_McKnight asked a simple question:
Do calories look the same to hunger neurons in the brain? The answer is no.
Fructose and glucose contain the same calories, but they engage fundamentally different gut-brain pathways.

I’ve been hosting the 7th International Melanocortin Meeting here in Cambridge with my co-organisers Roger Cone, Kate Ellacott and Anne White. Spectacular science! Here we are at the conference dinner! #obesityisnotachoice
I’m so excited to share our preprint on how brainstem neurons sense and integrate multiple body signals during food consumption. We imaged 1000s of neurons across the lateral parabrachial nucleus (LPBN) in behaving mice. biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…
🚨 Exciting New Research Alert! 🚨 Our latest study, published in #NatureMetabolism, reveals how memory circuits in the brain drive intake of fats and sugars and impact body weight. 🍫🍟 Let’s break it down! 🧵
We found that in vivo peptide release and signaling gradually enhances the response of satiety-promoting hypothalamic neurons to each bite of food during a meal. These consequences of each bite take minutes to manifest, and could help explain why slow eating enhances satiety.
I am thrilled to share the published version of our study on how neuropeptide signals regulate feeding in the hypothalamus! We imaged endogenous peptide signals in subcellular compartments during behavior. Below is an updated summary: rdcu.be/dZlI3

Monell Chemical Senses Center. These are the people who truly understand my deepest questions. This is the reason I chose the life of a scientist, to chat forever about nerdy things and making special friends. @AmberAlhadeff@GdeLartigue@dietrich_mo
Be mindful about axon collateralization! We have changed some experimental strategies based on this discovery. Proud to have the cover image for this journal issue and also a “Featured Article” designation! Happy times.
