America’s innovation economy is currently concentrated in a handful of metro areas.
According to The Brookings Institution, just five metros captured more than 90% of innovation-sector job growth from 2005 to 2017.
In a new column for Refresh Miami,
@saif305, founder of
@lab_22c, argues that this concentration is a national vulnerability, and that South Florida is one of the strongest places to build the next center of invention.
He argues:
• Trade can lead to invention. Miami is the nation's No. 1 gateway for international air freight, and its customs district moved $144 billion in goods last year. With this level of commerce and connectivity, discoveries can follow.
• With South Florida startups raising $4.13 billion in 2025, the region has the trade, institutions and capital to become one of the places where the country's next breakthroughs are built.
