BNHS CONSERVATION UPDATE. GPS-TAGGED SARUS CRANE FOUND DEAD IN GONDIA, MAHARASHTRA The Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) reports with regret the death of a GPS-tagged adult Sarus Crane (Antigone antigone) found in Dasgaon, Gondia district, Maharashtra, on 27 October 2026. The crane was part of a scientific monitoring initiative undertaken by BNHS since November 2024 to study the movement patterns, habitat preferences, and roosting and feeding behaviour of Sarus Cranes in the region. Such research contributes to a better understanding of the species’ ecology and supports evidence-based conservation planning. The findings of the veterinary examination and post-mortem will be important in establishing the cause of death and clarifying the circumstances of this incident. BNHS recognises the importance of responsible wildlife research and monitoring. The information emerging from this incident will need to be assessed carefully, based on scientific evidence and the findings of the examination. The conservation of Sarus Cranes depends on continued research, habitat protection and a sound understanding of the challenges facing the species in the wild. BNHS remains committed to scientific inquiry and the conservation of India’s wildlife and natural heritage. #BNHS #SarusCrane #WildlifeConservation #ConservationScience #BirdConservation #WetlandConservation #Biodiversity #Maharashtra
