When George Zapien arrived at #BarrowNeurologicalInstitute in #Phoenix, #Arizona, to have a small portion of his brain surgically removed, he didn’t feel worried or afraid—he felt happy. George had already spent 30 years living in fear. Behind his positive disposition lurked anxious thoughts about when and where his next #seizure would strike. “Am I going to be at work?” he said. “Am I going to be in church? Am I going to be shopping?” In the 10 months since undergoing #epilepsysurgery at Barrow, George hasn’t had a single seizure. It’s something he never thought possible when he was experiencing multiple seizures per week. Read his story at bar.rw/george.

Even the name is hard to pronounce. They may just be the most complex skull base tumors of them all…

Congratulations to Happiness Rabiel, MD, adjunct professor of #neurosurgery at #BarrowNeurologicalInstitute, on being named the 2026 "Doctor of the Year" at the 13th @TzHealthSummit in Dar es Salaam! The award honors Tanzanian physicians who achieve high standards in medical practice and serve as role models for the medical community. Health care workers across the East African country voted for Dr. Rabiel, who leads the Department of Neurosurgery at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (@Kcmc1971) in Moshi, #Tanzania, a partner site of the #BarrowGlobal initiative. This year's summit convened more than 2,000 delegates around the theme of "Building Health Sovereignty and Strengthening Health Systems in a Changing Global Order." Congratulations to #BarrowNeurologicalInstitute physician-scientist Jeremy Shefner, MD, PhD, on receiving the 2026 Distinguished Researcher Award from the Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM)! Although unable to attend, Dr. Shefner was honored at the recent @AANEMorg meeting in Orlando, Florida. The association recognized Dr. Shefner for his contributions to #neuromuscularmedicine and #ALSresearch, noting that his work has helped advance diagnostic techniques, disease monitoring, and clinical trial design. The association also highlighted his involvement in co-founding @NEALSConsortium, the largest ALS research network in the world. Barrow neuromuscular specialists Shafeeq Ladha, MD, and Timothy Fullam, MD, FAAN, both presented at the meeting. Dr. Ladha, who directs the Gregory W. Fulton ALS and Neuromuscular Disease Center, presented on decision-making in late-onset Pompe disease, and Dr. Fullam spoke about the use of nerve conduction studies in the clinic. Barrow neuromuscular specialists Ayushi Chugh, MD, FAAN, and Erik Ortega, MD, were also in attendance. @DrAyushi_MDFAAN served as lead panelist during the Women in MG Meet & Greet, which fostered mentorship, support, and collaboration among women physicians and scientists specializing in myasthenia gravis. Connection is at the heart of the #ALS community—and this fall, communities across Arizona will come together for Walk ALS. From Northern #Arizona to Tucson to #Scottsdale, people living with ALS, families, caregivers, friends, clinicians, and supporters will gather to celebrate, remember, raise awareness, and share hope for a future without ALS. This year's Route 66: "Cruisin' for a Cure" theme is a fitting reminder that while everyone's ALS journey is different, we don't travel it alone. Different journeys. Three walks. One connected ALS community—cruising toward a cure together. The Gregory W. Fulton ALS and Neuromuscular Disease Center at #BarrowNeurologicalInstitute is participating in @ALSAZ's Scottsdale walk, and you're invited to join our pit crew! 📆: Saturday, Nov. 7, 2026 ⏰: Check-in: 8 a.m. | Walk: 9 a.m. 📍: @SaltRiverFields, 7555 North Pima Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85258 Get involved by visiting bar.rw/alswalk2026.

Hemangioblastomas are vascular tumors, can look daunting on imaging, and their resection can be bloody. Strategically, handle them like arteriovenous malformations w/early interruption of feeding arteries, respect for the tumor capsule, and circumferential dissection that stays out of tumor…
