CRISPR technology offers an exciting opportunity for targeted sequencing in biodiversity science. Curious how DNA barcodes and entire chloroplast genomes can be enriched using CRISPR methods and without the need for PCR? Read: buff.ly/4aPeCLf

ALT A diagram outlining the difference between PCR and CRISPR based pipelines for DNA barcoding. Unlike PCR-based approaches where PCR reagents must successfully amplify target regions and sequenced on a lab-based sequencer, CRISPR based approaches enrich target regions using the CRISPR-Cas complex and sequenced using portable sequencing technologies (e.g., ONT). Where PCR-based approaches may be laborious and require expensive equipment, CRISPR-based methods are faster, more versatile and precise.
Come and work in a fabulous and exciting lab at Brown University on a variety of cool and interesting datasets! @tyler_kartzinel has an incredible opportunity available in his lab! Come and join us!
So thankful to have @lsweyrich join @EEB_Brown today and give an incredible seminar! Great to think about how the evolutionary histories of our microbiomes can help shape modern medical practices. Thanks for joining us, Laura 🙏🏼
1/7 Do different hosts have different microbiome ecologies 🦠🧬🐒? @kimberlyeroche tackled this question in the @AmboseliBaboons, and we're ready to share the preprint! biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

We show:
1) koala gut microbiomes show large variability across the landscape
2) koala landscape microbial patterns do not match landscape population genetic patterns (genetics are often considered when designing koala conservation initiatives)

So, could microbiome research could help us better understand natural variation, the composition, structure, and function of living systems, and how to maintain the resilience and ability of living systems to persist over time? We think so!

What does it mean to be ‘conservative’ with dietary DNA metabarcoding data? Popular strategies may do more harm than good, according to a perspective by @BethanColquhoun et al.

So many people (including many students from @EEB_Brown) contributed to this review and I'm so grateful for their collaboration and input!
We hope this review will lead to open-discussions in #DNAmetabarcoding about how to best deal with low-abundance reads. Transparency is key!
🚨NEW PAPER🚨
Can abundance-filtering in #DNAmetabarcoding influence ecological interpretation? Simple answer: yes! Long answer: it's complex. Check out our new paper to find out more and see some solutions that may help us navigate this issue!
