Postnatal care is an aspect of maternity services that seems to be almost universally poor. Yet failing to look after women properly postnatally, or discharging them too early, is clearly a false economy.

This article shows yet another triage failure (woman wrongly sent home when reporting reduced movements). "Currently, care for women reporting reduced fetal movement varies between hospital trusts." That's exactly the problem. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cxj0…

It says: “strangers, who had no direct involvement in their care, probed their most sensitive and personal information in a flagrant abuse of power (…) we recognise commitments have been made to dismiss or discipline NHS staff who snoop, we do not believe this goes far enough.”

And where's the Maternity Commissioner??? We first suggested this in May 2024, Govt finally agreed months ago. We're still waiting.

Not in the least bit surprised by this. The idea of a full plan by Christmas was very ambitious.
NEW: Yvette Cooper tells @CommonsHealth an "interim" maternity action plan due before Christmas - we were expecting full plan Modern service framework (national maternity standards) due middle of next year #maternitysafety

Emma Cox’s terrible story featured in my joint investigation with Channel 4 News. The details are horrendous… newstatesman.com/politics/he…
One of the most heart-rending stories to come out of Oxford was the case of Emma Cox, who gave birth to premature, 24-week twins when she was 17. One baby was resuscitated and taken to NICU (where she later died). 1/7

Last year Gill Castle led a team of women with stomas, many as a result of birth trauma, to the summit of Kilimanjaro. Really good to see Gill talk about it yesterday evening and to see Cloudline, the film of the event. Many thanks to @GeetaNayar01 for organising.

Stop diagnosing women with ‘anxiety’. It’s killing us.
I was told I was too young to have cancer - it had spread by the time I was diagnosed bbc.in/4A6RweX

Where is the compassion for a frightened and distraught 17-year old who has just lost one baby and told she now has to wait for the other to die? 6/7

It’s comforting to imagine problems in maternity can be addressed by better staffing and investment in buildings. It’s much harder to understand what to do about a culture that has no room for kindness to the women and babies in its care. 7/7
