Delighted that the first chapter of @VizerLiliโs PhD on strategic growth in clown anemonefish is now out as version of record in @eLife: Plasticity associated with adoption of social roles in clown anemonefish doi.org/10.7554/eLife.109871
Buston Lab en route to Papua New Guinea. This is the โbeforeโ photo: Morgan Bennett-Smith; Paige Becker; Lili Vizer. Lots of preparation to get to this point. Thanks to all involved, especially Lizzie McNamee (DSO). Let the adventures and science begin @BUMPatBU@BU_Biology
Hello #SICB2024, if you like clownfish (who doesn't?), social behavior, and transcriptomics then check out talks by former Buston Lab undergrad Natalia Karadimitriou in Social Behavior 1 (Friday) and current PhD student Lili Vizer in Social Behavior 2 (Saturday) #teamfish
On the cover of the most recent issue of Ethology: Nocturnal parental care in the clown anemonefish Amphiprion percula, led by Madison Pacaro, with @BarbaschTina, @marinemyelement, Juan Chavez Andonie, @Goby_Wan with thanks to @BU_Biology
First empirically measured marine larval dispersal kernel for hard coral. If you thought the oceans were well-mixed and your favorite populations were connected, think again. Awesome work by @LordScavo @kclesneski @DaviesswPhD @C_daloia @prof_finnertytinyurl.com/4m53xruu
If youโre at #Evol2023 check out E Schlatterโs talk on the evolution of dispersal kernels #T437, in the Migration session at 11:45am. In collaboration with Allison Shaw and Colleen Webb. Lots of great talks in that session
Huge congratulations to Dr Robin Francis for the successful defense of her dissertation on reproductive ecology and dispersal ecology of two coral reef fishes ๐พ It has been a privilege ๐ @robin_k_francis@BU_Biology@BUMPatBU
Why are your study organisms the size that they are? It may not be the reason you think. Here, we review evidence that social vertebrates can adjust their growth and size in response to fine-grain changes in social conditions๐คฏ@BU_Biology@CamZoologyauthors.elsevier.com/a/1ezVxโฆ
The spread of the directly measured distribution was ฯ = 3.93 km, the spread of the IBD distribution was ฯ = 2.90 - 4.10 km. Parameterizing Laplace dispersal kernels with these values yielded patterns incredibly similar to a kernel fit to the direct parentage data.
Check this out! Super-cool paper showing the congruence between indirect dispersal estimates using an isolation by distance model and direct dispersal estimates using genetic parentage analyses (bit.ly/3vW4Aob). Impressive work by Masters student @TNaaykens and @C_daloia
M is for Morgunda maccuneae. Named after the person that I owe my love of fishes to: Amy McCune. Shared because itโs so obscure that I bet youโve never heard of it, and to advertise the amazing rapid radiation of Morgundas in Lake Kutubu PNG. #FishABC#TeamFish#Ichthyology
Something to celebrate as these talented marine evolutionary ecologists all move on to greater things: @BarbaschTina to do an NSF postdoc in Illinois ๐บ๐ธ; @BranconiRebecca to take a sweet position in Naples ๐ฎ๐น; @TheresaRueger to take a Lecturer position in Newcastle ๐ฌ๐ง.๐พ๐พ๐พ
In non covid times, with a wall of plants and thank you notes which bring me joy to know I helped someone on their way a little bit. (Plants not on Twitter)
Flashback Friday 1/n. Five years ago this week we answered a question that had long intrigued marine ecologists: how far do baby fish disperse from their parents?

Always super-exciting when a graduate student gets the opportunity to showcase their work with a cover photo. Congratulations to the multi-talented Rebecca Branconi (not on Twitter) for her lovely manuscript, fantastic artwork and cover photo. @BU_Biology@BUMPatBU#teamfish
In brief, a combination of field observations, field experiments, and statistics reveals: Anemone Size -> Female Size -> Eggs Laid -> Male Care -> Embryo Survival.

Please RT: A colleague is looking for contributors to an article collection on social behavior and disease, and is looking for contributors who work on fishes. Any ideas #TeamFish? DM me and Iโll put you in touch @HawleyDana
For your #GobyWeek enjoyment, here's some serious #NastyGoby action for one picture: male Elacatinus lori front and center, with potential new mate he's courting in foreground and eggs he's guarding in background. These guys have taught us A LOT about marine larval dispersal
