Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire could be getting an elected major and a new strategic authority to help drive growth, under devolution plans.
The announcement came in the Government’s Autumn Budget today.
The Government says its in the final stages of agreeing Mayoral Strategic Authorities for 10 areas, including Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire.
The authorities operate as an regional tier of local government on top of existing council structures. They focus on things like economic growth, transport, education and skills and regional investment, with an elected mayor working alongside a regional board of local authority leaders.
Labour MPs in Staffordshire have welcomed the announcement, saying it will bring more power and investment closer to local communities and give local leaders more control over the priorities that can grow the economy, create jobs and improve people’s lives.
It comes as the Government paused plans for Local Government Reorganisation in Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire last month.
