Hey folks. This month my partner of 19 years @mitzommar was diagnosed with metastatic (stage 4) breast cancer.
We’re devastated, but hopeful that modern treatments can give her many more years.
It will be a long road and if you’re able, we could use your help.

A Super Nintendo or PlayStation looked better on retro TVs than today's ultra-sharp displays, but why is there such a difference? engadget.com/2236809/why-ret…
For anyone curious, the Nova’s custom, first-of-its-kind 4:3 120hz OLED screen means you can run black frame insertion and beefy CRT shaders and games up to and beyond PS2 and GCN.
@RetroGameCorps’ latency tests show that its responsiveness is on par with a CRT TV. Insanity.

"Qualcomm has signaled possible industry-wide price hikes. We’re pushing hard to keep Pocket Nova’s price stable and will update you as soon as we know more."
This is the dream folks. As close as you can get to playing all your games on a CRT TV, in your pocket. And a bit of Steam Deck functionality on the side for good measure.
Looking forward to doing a deep dive on it asap.
God, every time i see those new RetroTINK profiles i start drooling uncontrollably. Thank you to everyone who works to carry the strengths of this technology into the future.
I went through the entire SNES library and the number of games which use dithering to expand color palette and create the illusion of transparency is way higher than I expected.
Here is one great example: Mickey no Tokyo Disneyland
This is the kind of thing that brings a tear to my eye. Artists inspired to develop tools that mirrors the workflow of the old masters? Incredible stuff.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998, Nintendo) - N64
Sharp Pixels vs. N64 Composite via Toshiba 13A23
Spent some time cleaning up this cheap little set last night, only to notice the glass is scratched. Likely unusable for the blog, but it has a very nice picture.
Bold of the tech industry to assume that if they make devices prohibitively expensive to own that I won’t simply play the Nintendo Wii for the rest of my life.
I think @8bitdo has the opportunity to make their new TMR N64 sticks the best solution for the majority of people, just by adding just a couple more settings to their software.
C’mon guys, you’re so close.
Verdict: this is a solid stick, likely the best under $100… but it still has issues. the extra sensitivity (far better than other 3rd party sticks tbf) means you’ll need more careful inputs. @8BitDo REALLY needs to add sensitivity and dead zone settings in the software.
7.5/10
alright, time to see how these 8bitdo N64 stick replacements hold up
i heard they had issues at launch, but after a software update (the idea of updating the firmware of your n64 stick lmao) they’re supposedly very good

Despite being a CRT TV diehard until I am in the ground, my real goal has always been that the strengths of these displays are better preserved for everyone, in any use case.
When I started this blog upscalers didn’t even have an ounce of this. Seeing how far we’ve come… damn.
Visited Rapid Fire Arcade near Kansas City this week. I always love checking how arcade monitors are holding up in real world scenarios.
You could tell these folks have taken really great care of their hardware. Only a couple of Midway racers had been sadly swapped to LCDs.
Don’t believe everything you hear about razor sharp RGB in arcades. I’ve been told by Mortal Kombat devs that they leveraged CRT blur for the title.
Similarly don’t buy folks who cry “false nostalgia” at every pixel. There were always examples of blocky little sprites as well.
The real issue here is size. Look at this honker compared to my supposedly 20” PVM! Not only is the chassis nearly 23” wide compared to the PVM’s ~17.5”, but the tube itself is at least an inch larger in each direction!
I got this while playing Dragon Spirit: The New Legend (1990) late last night and I might be the most dread I’ve ever felt while playing a video game lol
