Former Chelsea player Gus Poyet, who’s coached Real Betis, Brighton, and Sunderland, says he’s interested in coaching an MLS team 👀
He talks about LAFC’s vacant position, and admits he had contact with FC Cincinnati and CF Montreal in the past.
The Uruguayan was asked what’s so attractive about MLS by former USMNT striker Hérculez Gómez on VAMOS podcast 🗣️
“The possibility of working in that kind of massive country with all the sport-related lifestyle that they have,” Poyet said about the U.S.
“I'm a sporting guy. My second best sport is basketball, okay? So I'm mad about basketball.
“My father was a basketball player, international player, two Olympic Games and played many World Cups.
“So when you are a basketball fan and you went through the life of Michael Jordan, it's impossible that you don't have that kind of feeling for America.
“And then I visited America a few times. One playing for Uruguay. I was in Dallas and I loved it.
“I mean, the four or five days we were there, it was spectacular. I scored, by the way. We drew, but I scored. It was one of my few goals in the national team.
“And then I traveled with my family a few times: Miami, LA.
“A few years back, I was in contact with a couple MLS teams. I remember Cincinnati when it was starting.
“I thought for a minute that I had a chance once with Montreal because of my only year in France, I speak French. So I thought, okay, that would help me there.
“I think it was just before Thierry Henry. I don't know which year was it.
“And now, I hope that I can get something at least. Like to talk in an interview with LA or one of the teams that they lost their coaches, you know, with all the respect to them, obviously.
“Have I ever had a conversation with John Thorrington (GM of LAFC)? Well, we put the name forward and we're waiting to see.”
As a player, Poyet helped Uruguay win the 1995 Copa América and played for likes of Chelsea, Tottenham, and Zaragoza in Europe.
As a manager, he worked for Greece national team, Real Betis, Brighton, Sunderland, AEK Athens, Bordeaux, Universidad Católica, Shanghai Shenhua, Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, and Al-Khaleej.
Will he be a success in MLS? 👀
