“The Minister of Not Reading the Room. He has every right to talk politics. This isn’t some “shut up and act” thing. At all. But jeez, what an unbelievably irresponsible time to roll out another helping of the both-sides, can’t-we-all-just-get-along schmuckery.
Early voting stats Monday. And the differences aren’t very abstract. And Talarico would seem to be exactly the kind of candidate he’s describing- a Christian who talks openly about his faith, has a record of working across the aisle, and is making a serious effort to reach conservative voters who might otherwise never consider a Democrat. He’s also fighting a campaign to paint him as some weak, effeminate liberal. And Talarico is exactly what all this independent-minded, bridge-building, country-over-party sloganeering is supposed to be about. So why not endorse him? Why not actually put your considerable celebrity muscle behind someone who embodies so much of what you claim to believe? Unless the whole point is to keep talking about courage and conviction without having to show any and worry about running into anyone at the football game who loudly disagrees .
The elephant in the room (Austin) is that between Greenlights and discovering social media, he went from never taking himself too seriously to a guy who apparently believes every thought he has is a profound insight the rest of us desperately need to hear. He’s reached the point where you half expect him to have an AI version of himself ready to go, just in case he strokes out and the world is deprived of his next great insight.
If he wants to be a political leader so badly, get off the shitter and run for something. Let Roy Spence spend a few months feeding him Green Lights slogans about common ground and the American spirit. Put those lame dentist office novelty poster platitudes in front of actual voters, lose, and get back to making middling buddy comedies. Or don’t.
There are legitimate conversations to be had about the failures of the two-party system. I’m not saying there aren’t. But pretending the parties are interchangeable, at this moment, in this state, isn’t wisdom or bravery. For a guy who talks so much about having the courage to take a stand, this might be the lamest stand imaginable. This is weenie shit when we need it the least.”
