I don't care that it's got a screen that folds. It's the software! But in the sense that it's incongruent, it's uneven, it looks like it's tacked on.

They exist, just not in Texas. Probably.
Looking to hire six tech journalist/analysts in Austin… having a heck of a time finding qualified folks. 🖊️ 🗒️ feels like few folks aspire to be full-time writers… in a newsroom… with other writers… grinding it out. which is confounding and sad to me. 🤷 Being a great writer and having a byline was considered such a great vocation in my day. 😞 Maybe folks just want to be freelance and a hermit working at home in their Pjs

The Next Raspberry Pi Leaked Inside Linux's Own Source Code... The next two Raspberry Pis leaked the honest way: through the Linux kernel's own source code. Two boards, a Raspberry Pi Zero 3 W and a Raspberry Pi 4 Model A, have quietly turned up in Raspberry Pi's kernel tree, in a merged pull request adding device trees for the Pi Zero 3 W and Pi 4A. Hackster reports the request went into the Raspberry Pi kernel repository on GitHub, signed off by Raspberry Pi's Marta Momotko. Neither board gets the Pi 5's chip. Bret Weber parsed the files on his blog: the Zero 3 W runs the Broadcom BCM2711, the same quad-core Cortex-A72 chip that powers the Raspberry Pi 4, replacing the Zero 2 W's quad-core 1GHz Cortex-A53. Phoronix puts the new SoC the same way and says it looks like it could be here soon. The Model A is the nostalgic one. Hackster points out there has not been a Model A since the Raspberry Pi 3, and the tradition means smaller and cut down. The device tree spells out how far: the Ethernet controller isn't enabled, a single HDMI output rather than the Model B's dual micro HDMI, the analogue audio pins empty, microSD only. Weber's caveat is the fair one: everything comes from device tree files rather than an official spec sheet, so mileage may vary. Prices and dates are still nowhere. Hackster again: Raspberry Pi "had not made any formal announcements regarding the new models," with nothing by way of a launch date or pricing yet. You can spot the next one yourself: watch the pull requests on the Raspberry Pi kernel repository, because these files landed there before anyone announced anything. The press release comes later. The source code already shipped.

This is what'll make Muse *fantastically* better than anything users have seen on their typical device.
Muse for SMBs might be the most underrated story in consumer agents right now They have near-infinite consumer distribution at very low cost, with a base of 3.64 billion daily active users across Meta apps But even more importantly, more than 500M SMBs use Meta for marketing. If Meta gives agent discoverability (preferred or not) to that SMB base, it could be a huge boost, especially for local businesses who can hyper-target users with urgent purchase needs Meta said in their Q3 earnings calls (and in blog posts prior) that they plan to build an ecosystem of connectors for SMBs in Muse - analytics across your Meta accounts plus QuickBooks, Canva, Stripe, etc. Many of these businesses are already trusting Meta with their growth / ad dollars - I could see Muse becoming almost a nervous system for SMBs that allows Meta to capture more and more of their activity over time Shopify has already leaned into this (@tobi) - Muse can search across the Shopify catalog and complete purchases for consumers, and businesses can manage their Shopify store in Muse via a connector And, the early Muse user base has shown a willingness to purchase via agents. 25% have completed a transaction via Muse, with average purchase size over $200. And, the top activity on Muse is shopping Very curious to see what comes next here, especially with holiday gifting on the horizon 👀

A Startup Rebuilt Nine Years of U.S. Law as Version Control and Caught the Text Drifting... A legal-tech startup called Lexifina did something quietly audacious: it treated nine years of United States law like a git repository and checked the official text against the laws themselves. Lexifina replayed 365 changes across nine titles, and 361 reproduced the next release point exactly. The method, in Lexifina's own words: "we took the public laws enacted in between, carried out their amending instructions on the older text in date order, and compared the result with the newer version." In the company's viewer, each phrase is colored by the Act that wrote it. Then the drift shows up. Take the small-business bankruptcy limit: Lexifina traces how the pandemic-era increase lapsed on 27 March 2022, how Congress restored it for two more years that June "for cases commenced on or after 27 March 2020 and still pending, which reached back over the gap," and where it stands today, at $3,424,000. This matters more than it sounds. A Technical University of Munich study found that language models "apply superseded rules after legislative amendments," and that retrieval approaches "substantially improve performance." If the law shipped as version control, every AI legal answer could stand on the right text at the right date. The writeup pulled 378 points and 199 comments on Hacker News. The top comment digs up a 2007 New York Times editorial that asked readers to "Think of what version control software could mean for the Congress." Pick a statute you care about, one you argue about at dinner, and go read it as colors and diffs. Once you can see who wrote which sentence, plain legal text starts to look unfinished. A diff view for the law. Took long enough.

Your Neglected Browser Tabs Grow a Jungle You Have to Cut Back... Every browser tab you stop looking at now grows a jungle, and the only way back into the page is to cut through it with your mouse. Charlie Gerard, a senior research engineer and creative technologist, built Overgrown as a Chrome extension that does exactly that, and her repository keeps the pitch to one line: plants invade your abandoned tabs the longer you leave them unread. The mechanic is a neglect clock that runs while a tab is out of view and stops while you're looking at it, so the jungle only grows on pages you're not reading. Past 5% coverage, the page behind the plants can't be used. You take it back by slashing through the vines with your mouse (the repo compares it to trying to open an overgrown door), and you choose your weapon: a rusty machete, a chainsaw or a flamethrower. Gerard's own tab bar is the best advertising. On a brand-new computer, she counts what she calls "only" 22 tabs open, and 14 of them are already completely overgrown. On Hacker News, where it pulled 394 points and 131 comments, the room is torn between "This is so useless yet so cool!" and a defender calling it "a visual representation of how old the tab is." Both readings hold up, and the extension works either way. If your tab bar is a to-do list you keep lying about, install Overgrown from its GitHub repository and let the vines keep score. If that sounds like too much ceremony, close ten tabs right now and see how many you actually reopen. I know which way this goes for me, because my tab bar would be a rainforest by Friday. The jungle never lies about what you meant to read later.

Someone Made Wikipedia for Just Your Neighborhood... Ed Jefferson built a site that shows you Wikipedia, but only the parts you could walk to. Local Wikipedia describes itself as "Wikipedia, but only for things a half hour walk from you." It works because a lot of Wikipedia already knows where it is. The site uses geocoded pages only, pulled from Wikipedia's geosearch, which MediaWiki documents as a search "for articles around the given point." The script behind Local Wikipedia sets that half-hour walk at 1.5 miles. If fewer than 25 things are that close, it reaches out to the nearest 25 within about six miles, and it stops at 500 (sorry, downtown Manhattan). The fun is in what people turn up. On Hacker News, one commenter hit "random article" three times and got "three weird stories I didn't know about the history of places within a few blocks of me in Portland, Oregon." Another found local schools "and then a cold war nuclear bunker that I didn't know about." I would very much like to know where my nearest bunker is, thanks. That same thread had a fair warning. The half-hour walk is a straight-line circle, so a river or a wall between you and an article doesn't count against it. Your location is handled in one line on the site: "Your location stays in this browser: links you share don't include it." This is very much Jefferson's kind of project. According to Ed Jefferson's site, he makes internet-powered interactive things and writes for The Guardian, Time Out and the New Statesman, and one of his earlier toys describes any location on Earth by listing nine actors who have played Doctor Who. Try it on your own street first, then on the street where you grew up. You'll probably learn something about both, and you might find a story worth telling your neighbors. Your neighborhood already has a Wikipedia page. It was just scattered.
