Im aktuellen @sciam berichtet @elisecutts über die Forschung von @CmTonauer zu exotischen Eisformen. Sie erzeugt im Labor Eis wie es im Weltall oder auf Monden von Saturn und Jupiter vorkommt. #AlienIce #wasser #chemie

scientificamerican.com/artic… Interesting plain language introduction to a recent paper on ice XII-XIV by the Innsbruck team, Tonauer, Hauschild, & co-workers. Surprised to know about textures of ices – I need more experiences to feel textural differences of ordered ice by hand!❄️

The scientists identified Saturn’s moon #Enceladus as the most compelling target. Plumes spew through its icy crust, rich in organic compounds, some of which are key for life. And its underground ocean seems to hold a powerful source of chemical energy that could fuel living organisms 🦠

Pure #cubic #ice without hexagonal stacking faults first proposed in 1943, but experimentally realized in 2020. Present calorimetry study clarifies difference in enthalpy between cubic & hexagonal ice to be -37.7 J mol-1 at 226 K. @CmTonauer @uniinnsbruck go.acs.org/5Dv
