As an AD, you have to be willing to make the difficult decision to replace or remove an athlete who refuses to live up to the team standard, regardless of their talent. If there is no accountability because a player is too talented to replace, your culture will eventually suffer. One athlete who consistently puts themselves above the team can poison an entire program. Talent can help you win games, but culture is what sustains success. In the long run, a group of athletes who fully buy into what you are trying to build will always be more valuable than one all star who is selfish, entitled, and determined to do things their own way. Protect the standard. Protect the culture. The program comes first.

Had a good outing against Team KC. Couldn’t have done it without a great defense behind me. Ran my fastball up to 86, with a good feel for all 4 pitches. Here are some clips from my outing. @Drew_Olla @Jimmy_PBKC @PrepBaseballMO @BCbaseballtoday @PB_Malzahn @CoachLersch

Hitters, you want to catch coaches’ attention? You hit a clean single, try for two out of the box. If the outfielder fields it cleanly, put on the brakes and retreat but not until that happens. You’ll be amazed how far that mindset takes you.

Rockies-Red Sox bottom of 8th inning tied with runners on 1B & 3B & no outs. Red Sox playing the infield in but holding the runner on 1B. Rockies safety squeeze(Well executed) & win the game. SOME THOUGHTS 1) If the runner on 3B scores the Rockies win expectancy goes through the roof. 2) The runner on 1B means nothing. By holding him or not crashing early &/or aggressively enough in anticipation of a safety squeeze you minimize your chances of throwing out the runner at HP. 3) If you flex your 1st baseman or close early & they steal 2B,so be it. If you anticipate that, you can always slide step/load & go,pitch out & throw him out. 4) Option ‘B’ is to hold the runner at 1B & close with your 1st baseman on the early side but have your pitcher use a high slow leg to give your 1st baseman time to cover more ground. 5) It also helps to control the primary & secondary of the runner on 3B by having the 3rd baseman drive the runner back from in front or behind. Playing close to the hitter/front (Most runners at 3B will trail you) & driving back before the pitch often gets the runner on 3B to retreat. We are not concerned with the 3rd baseman being out of position because the bunt is going to the 1st base side. There is value to a pitcher’s pick or even a catcher’s pick. 6) The Red Sox started the hitter with a BB. IMO good plan. Bunters rarely practice bunting breaking balls & when they go down to get to it they often drop the barrel of the bat producing a pop up. Unfortunately they threw a high fastball strike on the next pitch. Right at the Bunter’s eye level where he can best see the ball & in an area where no vertical adjustment was required. 7) At best this is a tough play to defend. It’s also a “cat & mouse” game because there is no guarantee they will bunt & all the defensive maneuvering opens up more holes for the hitter.

Great teams don’t make excuses.
They make adjustments. No…
“Yeah, but the refs…”
“Yeah, but they’re more talented…”
“Yeah, but we were tired…” Accountability starts when the excuses stop.

Nothing else I would rather do, worth it every day!
You wanna be a coach? ⚾️ You will feel unappreciated ⚾️ You will have people talk bad about you ⚾️ You will be consumed by the “job” ⚾️ You will have people question your every move ⚾️ You will be taken advantage of Is it worth it? Every coach who actually cares about his players and the team culture loves the process and the development. So yeah, it’s worth it in the long run and it’s incredibly rewarding helping young men develop into the people God created them to be… but man, it is really hard sometimes to keep going! *Coaches: You are needed, you are appreciated, you are important. Keep giving your all! #BaseballTruth

Teams that don’t strike out at a high clip win more games. Simple as that. This is amplified at the college level — and even more at the high school level and below. Once you get to two strikes, it becomes a team at-bat. Grind it out. Compete your tail off. Choke up, shorten up, widen out, move closer to the plate — whatever helps you execute your two-strike approach. Some call it their “B swing.” Make the pitcher work. We preach “look fastball away and adjust,” but there are plenty of effective two-strike approaches. You have to experiment and find what fits your swing and mindset best. A quality two-strike approach often leads to hard-hit balls. But even when it doesn’t, the defense still has to field it, throw it, and catch it. That’s pressure. A lot tougher to defend than a right turn back to the dugout. #DoingDirtWork
