Obama tonight on his Cheesecake Factory line: "They mobilized a whole of government response to that joke. Not to inflation, but to that joke. The White House even called the Secretary of the Treasury. This is the man who is in charge of the economy. The person who's supposed to be figuring out how to make your life more affordable. The guy who's supposed to be figuring out how to lower inflation. And reduce interest rates. They told him he should hold a press conference in front of the Cheesecake Factory."

I don’t understand why farmers need an endless series of welfare payments from the rest of us since Trump took office. Aren’t his policies working for you? You need us to pay you so you will keep voting for the guy who is failing you? Don’t you believe in free market capitalism?

A thread 🧵 about implementing @JOYofthePEOPLE type PLAY-Based development to HOCKEY, where skating is not as close to an innate skill as running is: 1. Skating fluency is the most important SKILL players need to help them develop into a fluent HOCKEY PLAYER.

Every word of this. 👇
The United States has spent decades trying to reverse-engineer the structures and aesthetics of the European top five instead of deliberately designing a soccer culture around what America actually is. That’s the core problem. We’ve built academies that try to mimic Ajax/Barcelona/City while still living inside a high-school + college + pay-to-play reality. We’ve treated the college game as a problem to minimize rather than a cultural asset to maximize. We’ve obsessed over possession metrics and “European” stylistic markers as signs of sophistication. And we’ve framed success as “catching up” to the Premier League rather than creating something the top five cannot easily replicate. The cost is real: we keep fighting our own institutional grain. What America actually has — and Europe largely does not — is a high-status educational pathway. High school and college aren’t just developmental stages here. They are cultural forges. They create institutional loyalty, public performance under local scrutiny, peer leadership, and community identity in ways pure club academies rarely match. High school’s primary value is not technical. It is cultural. It is one of the clearest expressions of distinctively American values that the top-five systems cannot easily copy. A more confident American model would stop asking “How do we become more like them?” and start asking “What can we do that they structurally cannot?” Treat the education pathway as a feature, not a bug. Amplify the cultural strengths of high school instead of apologizing for them. Build clearer bridges from that American experience into the professional game. Emulation has been a form of cultural self-erasure. The more we try to become a slightly delayed version of a top-five league, the less we develop the competitive advantages only our own culture, institutions, and scale can produce. It’s time to stop reverse-engineering Europe and start designing for America.

The quiet part out loud: the tryout isn't really measuring your kid. It's measuring him on two random days, in front of one set of eyes, against whoever happened to show up. A number on a sheet is a snapshot, not a verdict. Half the best players I know were somebody's cut once.

Who would have guessed that Russel Crowe was the answer for the USMNT? Great performances with him at the helm. Where can I buy that fishing shirt? Hopefully one of my 3 kids recognizes dad style and hooks me up for Father’s Day.

MLS NEXT: 135 clubs, 14,000 players. About 30 are actual MLS academies. The other 105 are private clubs charging $3,000-plus a season for a roster spot inside an MLS-branded league. A few dozen Homegrown contracts get signed each year. The other 13,000 kids get a logo on the jersey and an invoice in the inbox. The league is the marketing layer. Development is still parent-paid.

Fun part is seeing the kids that play in the MLS Next getting the same opportunities at the next level as they were before. No change has been made besides costing the families and clubs more money on gas, hotels, and entry fees.
So we have what... 2 levels of MLS Next ECNL and ECNL-RL N1 and N2 Elite 64 This is how many players? 100,000+? Why do we need all this?

These astronauts are just a balm: impossibly cheery, down to earth, committed, decent. They are clearly extraordinary people, and yet reassuringly normal. At a time when the news is dominated by people who are either cruel or corrupt or insane or incompetent or all of the above, they remind us not all is lost.
