Parents worry about trusting their kids with money. The bigger risk might be the trust that determines how they actually inherit it. Tim Hamilton, CFP®, CIMA® has seen that kind of mess up close in his own family. When his grandmother needed help, they found an annuity nobody knew existed, then other accounts the family had to piece together. In the latest episode of "The Concentrated Position" Tim and Dimitry Farberov, CFA®, CFP® discuss: → Why an old trust is worth revisiting long before anything feels urgent → The sibling who becomes the default caregiver while everyone else lives somewhere else, and the resentment that builds when nobody says it out loud → The difference between a durable and a springing power of attorney, and why getting it wrong can leave you locked out exactly when you need it most The episode also opens with what moved markets after a strong first half, from the Magnificent Seven's slump to the sharp rotation out of semiconductor names that had run up hundreds of percent. Put $10,000 into a 529 when your kid is born. By the time they're 18, $30,000 of the growth could come out completely tax-free. Todd Rowe, CPA, CFP® said it plainly on the recent episode of The Concentrated Position: a 529 works a lot like a Roth IRA, but for education. It's tax-free growth, as long as the money goes toward qualified education expenses. And the accounts have gotten more flexible than a lot of parents realize: → Funds can now cover K-12 private school tuition, not just college → Unused funds can roll into a Roth IRA for the beneficiary, within certain limits As Todd put it, unless a family has already decided education isn't something they're funding, a 529 is hard to pass up. Listen to the latest episode, "The Baby Balance Sheet," with Tim Hamilton, CFP®, CIMA® and Dimitry Farberov, CFA®, CFP® on Spotify or Apple Podcasts.

What happens when the investment data you rely on shows up half as often? The SEC might let public companies report on their earnings twice a year instead of the current four. The goal is to lower compliance burdens on smaller companies and encourage more of them to go public. Our CIO Stephen Dean, CFA spoke with S&P Global Market Intelligence about what that tradeoff looks like in practice: → Six months of company news hitting at once means there could be bigger bigger earning surprises and more volatility in small- and mid-caps → Analysts without access to alternative data or management relationships will have a harder time filling the gaps → That information asymmetry could create more misvaluations — and more opportunity for active managers Read Steve’s full take with S&P Global Market Intelligence about what this shift could mean for investors and markets: spglobal.com/market-intellig…

Our own Tara Shulman spoke with the Wall Street Journal about the real emotional toll an IPO takes on employees coming into life-changing money for the first time. With SpaceX, Anthropic, and OpenAI all heading toward public debuts, more employees are about to face that moment than we’ve seen in years. When working with clients through a liquidity event, Tara starts by figuring out what the money actually needs to do for their life before they feel pressure once the lockup expires. That context is what makes it possible to build a real plan, one that accounts for taxes, timing, and concentration risk, but is ultimately grounded in something more personal than market performance. And when the pressure does arrive, having someone who can hold you to that plan is what separates a good outcome from a costly one. 📣 $4B+ in AUM. Here’s how @Compound keeps compounding. When we merged Compound and Alternativ Wealth in September 2023, we managed about $1B in client assets. Less than two years later, we’ve grown 269% — adding nearly $3B more. So far this year, we’ve: → Welcomed 640 new clients → Added 17 new advisors in 10 states → Embedded tax filing into the Compound Dashboard → Passed 10,000 Dashboard users managing their wealth in one place From the start, our goal’s been simple: make it easier for clients to see and manage their entire financial life in a single place — and give advisors the tools to make that happen. We’re proud of what we’ve built so far. And we’re just getting started. Read more: compoundplanning.com/newsroo…

We’re so proud to be recognized by Financial Advisor Magazine as one of America's Top RIAs, and ranked #5 on their list of 50 Fastest Growing RIAs for 2025. It’s the second year in a row we’ve been featured on both lists. For the past two years, we’ve seen serious momentum: In 2024, we doubled our AUM and added 30 advisors. This year, we’ve already added 18 more advisors, surpassed $3 billion in AUM, and integrated multi-tiered, full-service tax support into our dashboard. The recognition from Financial Advisor Magazine means so much to everyone at Compound because it's proof we're actually reimagining wealth management — and it's having a real impact on the industry. We’ve grown by focusing on what matters most: giving clients the personalized support they need to grow their wealth thoughtfully, proactively, and holistically. Together, we're setting new standards for what modern wealth management can look like. You can read the full announcement here: compoundplanning.com/newsroo…

It’s a big day — we’ve passed $3 billion in AUM, and we brought seven outstanding financial advisors on board. Four of our new team members, an advisory group that previously managed $1.2B, also opened Compound’s new office in Des Moines. Meet the Des Moines team, each with over 20 years of experience: → Kevin Lors excels at integrating tax strategies into complex financial situations, throughout every phase of business ownership → Lindsey O'Neil brings a family office background, with expertise in cash flow planning, income tax, and more → Joleen Scheer has spent her career delivering holistic wealth management services → Aaron Schomer specializes in complex estate design, tax planning, and more We’re also bringing on Boyan Doytchinov, Wiley Belknap, and Patrick Scherer as we build out our advisor team. And another huge staff addition has come to our leadership team. Courtney Holt has been named our Chief Compliance Officer — she’ll play a key role in leading the firm’s regulatory and compliance operations as we continue to grow. Our mission is to bring in the top advisors and offer best-in-class technology so we can deliver the highest level of value to our clients. We’re proud to achieve that goal every day. Worn out by tax season? We’re thrilled to share that we’ve expanded our tax filing service — now fully integrated into client dashboards. Traditionally, firms treat tax time like a separate animal — not part of the broader financial planning picture. We’re bringing it all together in one place, embedding tax solutions directly into our wealth management platform. What does that look like? → Filing taxes right in our dashboard → Consolidating financial info in a central location → Integrating tax planning with your full financial strategy Whether you’re dealing with one W2 or managing equity compensation (or rental income, or private foundations, or multiple legal entities) we streamline the whole process. It’s like our CEO @christian_haigh says: "We're obsessed with making wealth management seamless — giving clients and advisors everything they need in one place." Taxes are another piece of the puzzle. It just makes sense to bring them in. And because taxes are a critical part of wealth management, tax filing is available exclusively to Compound Planning clients. Here’s everything you need to know about our expanded tax filing services: compoundplanning.com/newsroo…

Stephen Dean, CFA is back with his monthly State of the Market commentary, covering recent market events and why they matter. Solid economic reports throughout the month with little change in inflation caused investors to recalibrate expectations of the speed and magnitude of the Fed's rate cutting path. Futures markets are now pricing in both fewer rate cuts and a higher ending rate for this cycle than in September. [1] This shift dragged down both stock and bond returns and added volatility during the month. While equity markets have historically paid little attention to which party occupies the White House, additional market volatility came from investors positioning themselves for the outcome of what is projected to be an extremely close presidential election. October at a glance: → US real GDP rose 2.8% in Q3, down slightly from 3% in Q2. [2] → The Core PCE price index was up 2.7% in September from a year ago. [3] → The unemployment rate remained at 4.1% despite weak job gains on strike and hurricane impacts. [4] → Stocks ended the month on a weak note as Q3 earnings were mixed for some bellwether tech companies. → Equity market volatility increased on heightened focus on earnings and the election. → Interest rates have moved up since the Fed rate cut in September. The average American family spends 33% of their income on housing This becomes even more critical when starting a family and considering a bigger home Let's break down the key factors to consider: → Affordability: Aim to keep your total housing costs, including property taxes, insurance, and maintenance, below 30% of your gross income → Return on investment: To maximize the return on your investment, plan on staying in your home for at least 7-10 years, allowing appreciation to cover transaction costs Buying a bigger home isn't just about increasing your square footage, but creating a stable financial foundation for your growing family

Next, track your expenses: Track everything you’re spending for at least a month Then, break it down into two categories: fixed expenses (the stuff you can’t avoid, like rent or mortgage) and variable expenses (the things you have more control over, like dining out or entertainment) Want to learn more?
