“Why would anyone set up a business in this country right now?” It’s becoming impossible to take risks, hire and build in Britain. No wonder people are thinking twice.

Don’t forgot our panel on Securing the Future of Rural housing on Tuesday with @EnglishRural; we must secure homes for the future, across the country.
What a glorious sunrise as I set off earlier this week for Conservative Party Conference. Looking forward to our panel on Securing the Future of Rural Housing, to celebrating the countryside tonight with @CAupdates (labradors welcome), and to hear Victoria Atkins, as she sets out the Conservative vision for rural Britain on Monday. Under Kemi Badenoch, the party has changed. We will no longer make promises we cannot keep, and instead we are setting out an honest, workable plan for the country. That’s why I’m proud to be here 🇬🇧

What an absolute farce. Labour have literally orchestrated a bun fight in front of our very eyes, pitching farmers against one another. I am completely incensed at the pure incompetence of this government. Through their choices, Labour Ministers have literally designed a scheme around who can hit the ‘apply’ button first. DEFRA didn't even have the decency to tell farmers the scheme was opening at 10am this morning. And now, just over five hours later, all the budget is gone. It's utterly shameful. No doubt Labour will spin this as a great victory. But it isn’t. Tens of thousands of farmers have missed out, simply because they couldn’t get their application completed fast enough, or they were busy doing other important things - like farming! This is no way to run a hugely important scheme. It is not in the best interests of our farmers, or the environment. I am deeply worried about the further financial and emotional strain this government has chosen to create, especially when many farming families are under so much pressure already. The government was warned by many, but refused to act. Labour clearly don’t give a damn.
Window 2 of the Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026 (SFI26) closed at 15:48. Thank you to everyone who took the time to submit an application. Read the Defra farming blog for more information: defrafarming.blog.gov.uk/202…

Labour never should have introduced the family farm tax. It's bad for the families that steward our countryside and undermines our food security. Its removal is long overdue.
Labour is poised for U-turn on hated family farm tax in a victory for Jeremy Clarkson trib.al/KFT5s4Q

Burnham has downgraded farming responsibilities at Defra from Minister of State level to Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State. Says it all…
How much power does a farming minister actually have? @DanielZeichner lifts the lid on his time in Defra - inc the IHT fallout, being 'man-marked' by HMT, the SFI closure, & why glyphosate could be a sticking point in the SPS deal. Excl interview 👇 fwi.co.uk/news/farm-policy/z…

Labour had no plan for the countryside. By bringing in the Family Farm Tax, gutting sustainable farming funding, and launching a war on rural life, they've shown they don't care about it either.

This may explain why Defra is now paying up to £650,000 to get its staff out onto a farm. You'd laugh if it weren't so sad
Replying to @wallaceme
I was outside the Two Chairmen last summer, and I overheard a group of DEFRA officials trying to come up with the word 'arable' ("what's the name for a farm where there's, like, no animals?").

🇬🇧 It’s Back British Farming Day! To the farmers up and down our country, thank you. We appreciate the endless hours you pour into working and protecting the land, but even more than that, we know how you constantly go above and beyond for our rural communities. You tow stranded drivers out of sticky situations, clear blocked roads and play a vital role in supporting our fire services tackle wildfires which we have sadly seen so many of this summer. Your good will does not go unnoticed. Thank you. This work ethic and community spirit are the reasons why the @Conservatives will always stand behind British agriculture. Buying British off the shop shelves is one of the best ways to support our farmers. Yet under current rules, products can fly the Union Jack or be labelled “British” even when key ingredients come from overseas, so long as a small disclaimer is hidden on the packaging. That is wrong. It misleads shoppers and actively undermines genuine British producers. The next Conservative Government will fix this by closing the flag loophole. The Union Jack and “Made in the UK” claims will only be allowed when food is authentically produced right here in the United Kingdom. So that when you choose to buy British and back our farmers, it must do exactly what it says on the tin. I was delighted to be reappointed as Shadow Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs by @KemiBadenoch. Alongside my dedicated Shadow team, @_RobbieMoore, @DrNeilHudson, @AphraBrandreth, and Conservative colleagues, we are fully committed to fighting for your future. Together, we rallied alongside you to force a partial U-turn on the Family Farm and Family Business Taxes. However, simply increasing the cap does not go far enough. These taxes choke investment, force generational businesses to close and put our nation’s food security at risk. That is why the @Conservatives will completely AXE Labour’s vindictive Family Farm and Family Business Taxes. Backing British Farming shouldn’t just be for a day. It is for life. Together, let’s help our farmers thrive, not just survive.

It's #BackBritishFarmingDay! 🚜 I popped in to speak with the NFU this morning about its new report Ready To Grow which set out ways the Government can fix the growing food security crisis. I've also been out meeting local farmers throughout the summer listening to them about their concerns and challenges - with global price increases, the summer heatwave and Government regulations. There's so much more we could be doing to support our farmers, and a lot of it just needs the Government to get out of their way and let them farm. We're also continuing to campaign for the Government to scrap the Family Farm Tax in full. We successfully secured a partial u-turn, but it is still going to do so much damage to our family farms, so I want to see the new Government go further. And we're campaigning to close the flag loophole. Under current rules, products can display the Union Jack Flag or be marketed as British even when key ingredients are sourced overseas, provided disclaimers are included elsewhere on the packaging. This is incredibly misleading for consumers and undermines the high standards of genuine British producers. We want to fix that loophole and support British farmers.

But they need action, not warm words. ❌ Scrap the Family Farm Tax ❌ Axe the Fertiliser Tax 🇬🇧 Back British food production 🐑 Support the next generation of farmers Food security is national security. 🌾🐑🇬🇧This BACK BRITISH FARMING DAY, our farmers and growers expect actions, not empty words and promises from government. This year’s drought has again shown how fragile our food and farming sector is. Yields are down. Wildfires have been widespread and the Bluetongue virus has hit our livestock farmers hard. We are ever indebted to our farmers - but they need government to be on their side. Food security and water security must be taken more seriously by Ministers. Not just words, or headlines politics, but action and implementation. The government must stop hammering our food and farming businesses with tax hikes. They must axe the fertiliser tax, family farm tax and support the next generation. The Conservatives will do this. Food security and water security are central to our plans.
