Maine 4th graders posted the worst declines in NAEP reading scores of any state from 2019 to 2024. So I wrote a piece in the @PressHerald about what we can do about it: pressherald.com/2025/03/21/o…
Always love getting to write about 🩵 my home state 🩵 for @EducationNC! Seven NC community colleges have had more than 30% FTE growth since 2018-19—but that momentum is hitting a literal wall 🏠🏗️ednc.org/for-growing-communi…
Last year, after Maine 4th graders posted the worst declines in reading scores of any state from 2019-24, I wrote a piece in the @PressHerald on what state leaders could do to help turn things around.

I noted a 2023 review of Maine’s teacher preparation programs by @NCTQ found that the state’s 3 largest programs—UMaine, UMF, and USM—don’t teach their aspiring teachers the key components of reading instruction.
Just read today in the @mainemonitor that UMaine got another "F" from @NCTQ because they "did not provide records about its reading instruction curriculum after the National Council on Teacher Quality asked for them in a public records request." themainemonitor.org/umaine-a…
Happy to have my byline again in @EducationNC! Maine's free community college program has increased enrollment in @MCCSme and boosted transfers to the @UMaine system—but state lawmakers declined to continue funding it last year.

It's hard with so many new faces in NC to understand how this is the passing of an era.
Read the remarks from both sides of the aisle. A time when partisans could battle it out in the legislature and cheers to beers hours later.
An NC man with impact well beyond state lines.
Great story from @TheAssemblyNC and yet another data point in my argument for why Tar Heel Mainers and Mainer Tar Heels are the absolute best. 🩵🌲theassemblync.com/education/…
🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨"The reading skills of American high school seniors are the worst they have been in three decades, according to new federal testing data ... In math, 12th graders had the lowest performance since 2005." nytimes.com/2025/09/09/us/12…
The through line in Moore’s writing is Northern California with a healthy dose of pro baseball in Oakland (Athletics or otherwise). His piece nominated for the 2024 Jenkins Medal was a definitive chronicle the A’s and their fans. Portfolio and clips at danmoorewriter.com/
