The Fallopian Tube’s Secret Bodyguards 🛡️
I am thrilled to share our lab’s latest study which flips the script on how we think about the origins of ovarian cancer. For a long time, ciliated cells in the fallopian tube were seen as "passive bystanders" in tumor development.
Our research reveals they are actually active guardians of genomic integrity. We found that these cells use a STING-driven surveillance mechanism to act as a biological "cleanup crew," clearing away damaged cells before they can turn into high-grade serous carcinoma (HGSC). When these "gatekeepers" are lost, the door swings wide open for cancer to initiate.
This discovery shifts our understanding of the epithelial microenvironment and points toward new strategies for early prevention.

Congratulations Dr. Puleo @Noah_Puleo on successfully defending your PhD thesis. It was a pleasure mentoring you and seeing you evolve into an accomplished scientist and leader. Good luck on your next endeavor and I’m excited to see your many future successes.
What an amazing Ovarian Cancer conference @RivkinCenter @AACR
It is remarkable to see so many passionate scientists, physicians, and patient advocates coming together to work on finding a cure!
Thanks to organizers of OvCa Midwest Focus #OCMF for organizing an exceptional meeting. Congrats to the entire lab @Noah_Puleo for presenting your work with remarkable intelligence and passion esp. @TeitelJessica for winning best oral! You all make me proud! Passion=progress.
It was great to be able to share our research team’s discoveries and host a lab tour for @MIOvarianCancer MIOCA. With passion comes progress and our collaboration will continue to push for more research, improved awareness, and better treatments!
I am so fortunate to do what I love #cancerResearcher but what makes it even better is that I do it with an intelligent and passionate amazing team!! @TeitelJessica@Noah_Puleo Thanks for the awesome gift #M&Ms and looking forward to our @FowlingAnn rematch!
So proud of the @DiFeoLab @McAnultyJessica @Noah_Puleo & @UmichCancBio @B_B_Beast for supporting ovarian cancer research and participating @MIOvarianCancer Teal Fun Run! It was great to be able to share this special day with cancer warriors, researchers, my lab, parents, & kid’s.
Great to see such interest in Rita Avelar’s work on PP2A modulators and PARPi for the treatment of high grade serous cancer. #AACR22#teamwork@NarlaLabUMich@CDMRP funded

Enjoying Robert G. Roeder @RockefellerUniv Keynote Lecture @UMichPath . It is amazing that his original manuscript describing the RNA Pol I, II & III was initially rejected from Nature b/c not general interest!?!?!? Luckily, after much convincing it was accepted!#sciencestruggles
Very proud of Jessica McAnulty from our lab @DiFeoLab! She gave an outstanding talk on new ovarian cancer specific drugs we have uncovered at the Training Program in Translational Research Annual Retreat! @UMRogelCancer@UMichPath#WomenInScience@umichgradschool
