We joined the Network Support Team and fellow grantees of the Disability Justice Fund for Women, supported by ADD International, in a meeting with government representatives to share the work undertaken to popularise and raise awareness of the African Disability Protocol (ADP).
The meeting brought together Empower Her, LamiCare and The Disability Lane, alongside representatives from .
@Mglsd_UG of Disability and Elderly, the Commissioner for Special Needs Education from the Ministry of Education and Sports, the Commissioner from the Equal Opportunities Commission, and the Principal Rehabilitation Officer, among others.
During the meeting, The Disability Lane presented its work using digital advocacy, regional engagement and storytelling to equip young women with disabilities with knowledge and skills to amplify their voices and advocate for their rights. Through our flagship programme, InclusiTalk, we continue to create digital spaces where disability rights, lived experiences and issues affecting persons with disabilities can be discussed and brought into public conversations.
Beyond sharing achievements, the engagement provided an opportunity to explore the support needed by the ministry to advance a national action plan for the domestication and implementation of the ADP, following Uganda’s ratification of the Protocol in 2024.
It should be noted that collaboration between government institutions, organisations of persons with disabilities, women-led initiatives and development partners will be essential to translate the Protocol’s commitments into meaningful change in the lives of persons with disabilities.
We appreciate the opportunity to share our work, learn from fellow grantees and contribute to conversations on advancing disability rights in Uganda.
