I'm CA's Acting Surgeon General. Today, I'd like to publicly share my journey with bipolar disorder. Stigma festers in the dark and scatters in the light. By speaking out, I hope to help dispel stigma. To help anyone struggling know they’re not alone — and to have hope. 1/

A surprise to everyone, including myself: I'm a BIG fan of the new US food pyramid. To me as a public health and metabolic health enthusiast, the new US food guidelines get a lot right, and did a lot to improve on our previous iterations In particular, they emphasize: 👀 Whole foods over processed; limited sugar and alcohol — no brainers 🫀 Red meat (long unfairly vilified — review data in my Substack later today) and protein 👣 High-fat dairy: the least processed, most healthy dairy option, for those millions of us without lactose intolerance — linked to lower stroke, dementia, among other benefits 🫁 Low-carb diets for chronic disease management: known to decrease inflammation, and oxidative stress and metabolic dysfunction — but still underused My own diet conforms heavily to the principles behind the new food pyramid, and it's allowed me to manage psoriatic arthritis without medication AND substantially decrease medications for bipolar disorder ➡️The guidelines DON'T go far enough in exonerating dietary saturated fat, limiting intake to 10% calories — though saturated fat intake has been shown NOT to be linked to death from any cause, heart attacks or coronary artery events — a myth that persists among medical professionals and others alike (PMID: 40416032) More in my Substack later today

“Can I bring my baby to the interview?” The message came in at 11 PM: “Hi, I have an interview with you tomorrow at 2 PM. My childcare fell through. Can I bring my 8-month-old? I understand if you need to reschedule.” Old me would have rescheduled. Unprofessional. Distraction. Red flag. New me replied: “Absolutely. See you tomorrow.” She showed up with her baby on her hip. She apologized three times before even sitting down. Ten minutes in, the baby started crying. She tried to soothe him while answering questions. She apologized again. I stopped the interview and said: “Hey. You’re managing a fussy baby, answering complex questions, and staying calm under pressure. That’s literally the job. Handling chaos while staying professional. You’re already proving you can do it.” Her eyes filled with tears. We hired her. She’s been with us for a year now. The most reliable team member we have. Why? Because when you’re used to handling a screaming infant at 3 AM and still showing up to work the next day, workplace stress feels like nothing. Working parents, especially mothers, are some of the most organized, efficient, and resilient people you’ll ever hire. Yet we lose them because our hiring processes are built for people with zero caregiving responsibilities. If your interview process can’t accommodate a parent facing a childcare issue, you’re not filtering for professionalism. You’re filtering for privilege.

Not a single county in Idaho, Louisiana, Oregon, Tennessee, Utah or Wisconsin has a kindergarten vaccination rate that allows herd immunity protection from measles. If you live in one of these states and have a kid under 4, especially one between 6-11 months, please be aware that early vaccination is protective against the measles virus. 6-11 months: An early bonus dose is helpful 1-3 years: You can get the final MMR as soon as 4 weeks after the previous dose — to get kids fully protected!
