I don’t agree.
When abundance era arrives, I certainly won’t stop "working" and just live off UHI, doing nothing.
But I also don’t find the idea of people living comfortably on UHI, without working, dystopian. Quite the opposite.
UBI, or even UHI, will simply become the new baseline. Today, homeless people living on the street (current bottom) will get help from others or institutions, at least with basic necessities like food, so they won't starve.
As human civilization gets richer and more advanced, that minimum will be rising. Instead of barely getting by, it could mean receiving $5 000, then $10,000 a month (which, thanks to AI and automation driven deflation, could eventually have the purchasing power of $1 million today) and that purchasing power will continue to grow over time.
But the main point is that we can still build things, "work", and do something useful. Nobody will forbid you from doing any of that.
People simply won’t need to worry about basic necessities anymore.
Many people have built their entire identity around being a slave and have a problem with "you won't need to work" visions of the future.
And some people don’t just accept the grind. They want to make it holy.
Work to eat. Work to pay rent. Work to pay bills. Repeat until you die. That’s not living, but surviving.
This is basically a polished Stone Age, and it’s on its way out.
A new world is coming, and this era will become a memory nobody misses.
This sounds like a dystopian nightmare. I do not want to live off of handouts from my Big Tech overlords. The fact that anyone sees this as some heavenly vision of the future is extremely depressing. Some people (most?) just simply do not want freedom or autonomy. They do not have ambition of any kind. For ambitious, independent minded people, this fact is very hard to absorb.
