Today is the anniversary of the death of Corporal Scott Smith who was killed in Action, Afghanistan 21 October 2012. Scotty was my very close friend and was my room mate during this rotation. He was an amazing human! Scotty died during an improvised explosive device (IED) during a compound clearance and disruption operation against an insurgent network specialising in a new low metal IEDs in northern Helmand Province. Scott was awarded a Commendation for Gallantry Awarded posthumously on Australia Day, 26 January 2013. The official citation for his commentation: “For acts of gallantry in action on 21 October 2012 while an Explosive Ordnance Reconnaissance Technician in @ADF_SOCOMD SOTG Rot XVIII in Afghanistan.” “Scotty's clear thinking, courage and selflessness were of the highest order and in keeping with the finest traditions of the @AustralianArmy . Cpl Smith's actions in warning and advising his SOER team commander and clearing safe areas and routes in the face of significant threats from IED's and accurate small-arms fire undoubtedly saved the lives of other Special Operations soldiers.” Scott's acts “exemplified the finest service and dedication.” to his fellow operators.
