Our teams have been out supporting residents in response to Storm Boelo. Across the weekend, we’ve been responding to reports of fallen trees, damage to buildings, fencing and street lighting, flooding, and debris obstructing roads. All calls were responded to and areas were made safe. We also provided support to @Northpowergrid when members of the public were affected by power outages. This included opening Warm Spaces at Consett, Woodhouse Close and Spennymoor leisure centres for people to charge their phones, keep warm, use the shower facilities and have a hot drink. Work continues to clean up the county in the aftermath of Storm Boelo. Our countryside rangers are out assessing the damage, and we continue to respond to incoming calls. We estimate that the clean-up operation will take place across most of this week. We would like to thank residents for their patience while we work to keep our communities safe and the county moving.

We’re pleased to confirm the operator of a council-funded bus service has made changes to a route so that it now serves residents of Henknowle. Weardale Motor Services operates the number 85 bus, which we fund, and which runs between Bishop Auckland and Barnard Castle. The company has now made changes so that in addition to the stops the 85 was already serving, it now calls at Henknowle too. Cllr Tim McGuinness, our Cabinet member for rural, farming and transport, said: “We’re pleased to see Weardale reviewing its route and being able to find a way to serve the people of Henknowle, who I am sure will welcome the additional service. “We fund operators to run services in the best interest of our communities and it’s good to see Weardale doing exactly that.”
