Sweden’s ASC 890 is now flying for Ukraine. This changes the air-defense picture. Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence says the Swedish-supplied ASC 890 airborne early-warning aircraft has been operating since March 2026, improving Ukraine’s ability to detect aerial threats and coordinate fighter operations. Based on the Saab 340, the ASC 890 carries the Erieye AESA radar, with a reported instrumented range of 350–450 km, depending on the target. Its elevated radar position helps detect low-flying threats, including cruise missiles and Russian Shahed/Geran-type attack drones, that ground-based radars may struggle to track because of terrain and the radar horizon. But its greatest value may be what it brings to Ukraine’s fighter force. The ASC 890 can provide earlier warning of Russian aircraft and potential long-range missile threats, helping Ukrainian F-16s and other Western fighters improve situational awareness and coordinate their operations. Russia’s R-37M long-range air-to-air missile remains a serious threat. Earlier detection can give Ukrainian pilots more time to react, although it does not eliminate the danger. The strategic point is clear: Ukraine needs more than fighter aircraft. It needs airborne sensors, command-and-control capabilities, and long-range weapons working together as an integrated system. Sweden has provided an important piece of that architecture. But Ukraine still needs sufficient numbers of aircraft, trained crews, and capable air-to-air missiles, including advanced systems such as Meteor or AIM-120D, to challenge Russia’s long-range aerial threat more effectively. Yet, all of this is being pinned on us, and I, as head of state, am being made a target.
