Boreal toads vary in their tolerance to the fungal pathogen Bd. That's linked to genetics: tolerant populations have distinct MHC alleles, higher heterozygosity & different functional supertypes. This could help flag populations for conservation 🐸🧬

Long-range population connectivity and limited restrictions on gene flow have shaped the evolution and diversification of flying-foxes across the Indo-Australian Archipelago. Our #newpaper has implications for conservation, speciation and #biosecurity.

Researchers in @ScienceAdvances have demonstrated that brief physical contact between healthy and bleached coral can restore algae to the bleached coral, leading to their full recovery. scim.ag/4s40Tt3
ALT Two coral samples are shown side by side in a comparison. On the left, labeled "Week 0," the corals appear lighter, with distinct white and brown patterns. On the right, labeled "Week 9," the same corals are noticeably darker with more prominent brown hues, indicating changes over time.
Flying-foxes are highly mobile, but gene flow isn't uniform: isolation-by-distance in Pteropus alecto, panmixia in P. poliocephalus & P. scapulatus, and asymmetric hybridization shape their evolution and diversification 🦇🧬

Crop breeding & fertilisation can disrupt soil microbe mutualisms. Yet, new research on peas found that seed yield and N₂ fixation were positively genetically correlated. Breeding could therefore raise both yield and symbiotic nitrogen fixation 🌱
