Both pilots successfully ejected using the Martin-Baker US16LA Ejection Seat.

On this day: 71 years ago, company test pilot Cariton B. Ardery made the first flight of the Republic F-105 Thunderchief (October 22, 1955). Originally developed as a low-altitude nuclear attack aircraft, the big, tough and fast F-105 quickly evolved into a multi-role fighter, equally apt at shooting down MiGs, dropping bombs, and hunting SAMs over the hostile skies of Vietnam. It became a true icon of the 1960s.

Tom Skerritt, the prolific, award-winning actor known for his roles in "M*A*S*H," "Alien," "Top Gun," and "Picket Fences," has died. He was 93.
Skerritt died Wednesday from natural causes, his family confirmed in a statement shared with USA TODAY.
"We are heartbroken by his loss," the family said. "While the world knew Tom through his remarkable acting career, we knew him for his humor, curiosity, wisdom, generosity, and the love he brought into our lives."
