The security protecting our assets today might not be enough forever. Quantum computing is one development that could eventually challenge some of the cryptography blockchains rely on. That’s why preparing for the future means building systems that can adapt as security needs change. @Starknet decided to change things and they caught my attention. Starknet is an Ethereum Layer 2 that uses STARK proofs to verify computations efficiently. Its proving system relies on hash-based cryptography rather than the elliptic-curve mathematics targeted by Shor’s quantum algorithm. But its approach goes beyond proofs. ➝ Programmable accounts make upgrades more flexible. Starknet accounts are smart contracts, meaning developers can customise how transactions are verified. This creates a way to introduce new signature methods without necessarily requiring a network-wide upgrade. ➝ Post-quantum signing has been tested. An experimental Falcon-512 account implementation by OpenZeppelin has completed a successful mainnet transaction. It’s meaningful progress, but the implementation remains experimental and unaudited, with more work needed before wider adoption. ➝ There’s still an Ethereum dependency. As a Layer 2, Starknet relies on parts of Ethereum’s security infrastructure. Some cryptographic changes will therefore depend on Ethereum’s own upgrades. That’s also why StarkWare and the Starknet Foundation are exploring an independent Starknet Layer 1. The idea is still under research, not an approved migration. Starknet has set a 2027 target for full post-quantum security, but the work isn’t finished yet. What stands out is the focus on cryptographic agility: making it easier to adapt security as technology evolves. Preparing for a threat isn’t the same as being fully protected against it.
