In today's open source AI news:
Mistral is back in competition, releasing Mistral Large 4, also know as Le Chonk (named after a Mistral meme from earlier in the year).
The details: 1T parameters, 49B active, natively multimodal, 1M context. It was trained from scratch on 3,800 Blackwell GPUs in Mistral's own European datacenters.
Mistral says it's the strongest open-weights model from the US or Europe, and it lands just behind Claude Opus 5 in a blind human eval on coding (!)
The model excels in cybsecurity -- on the Artificial Analysis Cyber Index, ML4 solves 50 tasks. Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra solve about 30 each, and their own safety filters block them on more than a third of the tasks.
Currently, only a preview is available, with the weights set to be released later.
Meet Mistral Large 4, aka Le Chonk.
• 1T parameters, natively multimodal. 49B active.
It is the best open weights model from US or Europe on aggregated benchmarks.
• State-of-the-art on critical workloads, including cyber defense, manufacturing and finance and it surpasses closed frontier models on visual grounding.
• Forged in Europe end-to-end and is deployable from Europe via our own Mistral Cloud infrastructure.
• Available to all via API today. Working with cybersecurity partners privately.
Open weights release end of October.
