𝐀 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐟 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐧 𝐮𝐧𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐯𝐚𝐮𝐥𝐭 𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐤. 𝐇𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐭 𝐮𝐩 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐬, 𝐠𝐨𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐰𝐚𝐥𝐤 𝐢𝐧… 12 seconds later, a bot walked in first, emptied it, and later sent most of the money back. This is the BiFi story, one of the strangest DeFi heists of the year 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐝?: ⇥ BiFi's USDT lending market on Ethereum sat idle for ~36 days (264,060 blocks). ⇥ A bug let anyone re-charge that month of interest over and over in one block, at a rate they could pump themselves. ⇥ An attacker deployed an exploit contract. It never got to run. One block later, MEV bot c0ffeebabe.eth ran the attack: ➢ 40.5M USDT flash loan from Morpho. ➢ Deposit, borrow, repay, withdraw, on a loop. ➢ 165,575 USDT out of a market holding ~168.6K. 36 hours later it returned 159,103 USDC. The gap: a builder tip and ETH's price move. Think of a parking meter in an empty lot. Nobody parks for a month, so the meter stores "30 days unpaid." The bug let one driver re-bill those 30 days again and again, at a price they set, before the clock ticked. Busy markets reset the meter every few blocks. Dead ones don't. My take: the hero here was luck. The money came back only because a bot got there first and its operator chose to return it. Same bot did this with Curve in 2023 ($5.4M). 8 minutes after the refund, address poisoners showed up. Dead markets still hold real money. Pause them.
