In Shippingport in Beaver County, a 2 GW hyperscale data center is being developed on the site of the former Bruce Mansfield coal power plant.

Ohio’s oil and gas well database runs on Microsoft Access. It needs paid software, and it has outgrown Access’s 2 GB limit, so it’s split across two files.
Ohioans shouldn’t need a software license to find out whether the well next door was inspected.
Tonight at 6pm: Allegheny County's hearing on the Springdale data center. It's open to anyone. You don't have to live in Allegheny County, or even in Pennsylvania. Written comments are due Nov 30:

Wastewater from the Redbird #4 injection well flooded 28 conventional production wells in Ohio, some as far as five miles away.
It didn’t result in a violation. The operator made voluntary changes and resumed.

In @MariettaTimes: the Kris-Mar 1 well in Washington County started leaking brine in 2023, and ODNR's incident record lists the amount released as zero. Bev Reed of @BuckeyeEnviNtwk: "The well was flowing for days after the leak was found."

The former Cheswick Generating Station coal plant site in Springdale is being converted into a hyperscale data center. The county's comment period is open to anyone, wherever you live. Comment here:

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has suspended 17 data center permits after our investigation found that the agency continued to issue permits for the facilities despite the governor's directive to pause.
Over the summer of 2026, we researched twelve data centers in Southwestern PA. If they're all built, they could add enough gas-fired power to equal about three-quarters of the electricity the entire state used in 2024.

ODNR’s oil and gas division can’t fine operators directly. It has to ask the attorney general to sue.
We’re not aware of a single case of ODNR doing that for injection-well violations.

Over the summer of 2026, our four interns researched 12 data center proposals across six Southwestern PA counties. If they're all built, they could add enough gas-fired power to equal about three-quarters of the electricity the entire state of Pennsylvania used in 2024.

“Those of us who are small oil and gas producers have had wells ruined and properties contaminated by nearby injection wells.”
Bob Wilson, a Washington County well owner. Our report with Buckeye Environmental Network:

Of the 2,373 Ohio oil and gas incident records with a quantity filled in, 797 say “unknown” or “unable to quantify.”
That’s one in three. It’s hard to hold anyone to account for a spill nobody measured.

Texas' environmental permitting agency shut down its online permitting portal this week after watchdogs said data center related permits were getting advanced and approved -- against the governor's order. It's still offline today.
texastribune.org/2026/10/21/…
The watchdogs announced their findings the same day TCEQ told the governor they were following his directive and hadn't issued any permits. It's all unfolding of course in a frenzied election cycle where bipartisan data center opposition has grown loud. texastribune.org/2026/10/20/…
