MAGA, pro-Russian and anti-EU accounts are accusing Donald Tusk of being a “globalist” who wants to flood Poland with migrants.
Let’s look at what Donald Tusk has actually done on immigration in Poland and Europe:
- Deployed thousands of soldiers, police officers and border guards to secure Poland’s borders.
- Reinforced the border fence with Belarus, expanding surveillance systems and security infrastructure.
- Suspended most asylum applications at the Belarusian border, a measure repeatedly extended by his government.
- Reintroduced border controls with Germany and Lithuania to combat illegal immigration.
- Publicly refused additional migrant relocation quotas under the EU’s migration pact, standing right next to Ursula von der Leyen.
- Tightened visa rules, student visa requirements and work permit procedures to restrict abuses of the immigration system.
- Reduced the number of work visas issued by 87%, from 123 000 in the first quarter of 2022, under the PiS government, to just 16 000 in the first quarter of 2026, under Donald Tusk.
- Increased the enforcement of deportation decisions, with 2 700 deportations in the first quarter of 2026, compared with around 900 in the same period of 2022, under PiS.
- Continued border pushbacks, despite criticism from human rights organisations and international institutions.
- Defended stricter European border protection and argued that uncontrolled immigration threatens Europe’s security.
Donald Tusk is strongly pro-European, but his record on immigration is far more restrictive than the “globalist” caricature suggests.
Being pro-European does not mean supporting open borders.
