Abortion is essential healthcare. Abortion is a human right. Then, why do restrictive laws still push women and girls into unsafe care, create fear among healthcare providers and stand in the way of dignity, autonomy, health and equality? This International Safe Abortion Day, we call for laws that protect not criminalize. For abortion care that is safe, accessible and dignified. For reproductive autonomy without criminalization. For every woman and girl to exercise her rights without fear. The work continues. #sept28 #abortionishealthcare

International Safe Abortion Day offers another moment to interrogate the colonial legal legacies that continue to influence access to safe abortion in Africa. In their opinion piece, Dr. Jessica Oga and Dr. Moses Mulumba examine the colonial origins of Senegal’s abortion law and its continued application in post-independence Senegal. Their analysis raises important questions about inherited legal systems, reproductive rights, and the pursuit of reproductive justice in Africa. Today is International Safe Abortion Day, and the truth is abortion is essential healthcare. Across Africa, there has been progress in protecting reproductive rights, including through the Maputo Protocol, which recognizes access to safe abortion in specific circumstances. Yet restrictive laws, criminalization, stigma and systemic barriers continue to prevent many women and girls from accessing the care they need. Unsafe abortions continue to contribute to preventable complications and maternal deaths, while uncertainty in the law discourages healthcare providers from providing care. We call on African governments and policymakers to act urgently to: 🔴 Reform restrictive abortion laws and remove vague and punitive provisions 🔴 Recognize safe abortion as essential healthcare, accessible without stigma, discrimination or unnecessary barriers 🔴 Strengthen health systems and equip healthcare providers to deliver safe abortion and post-abortion care 🔴 Ensure accurate, non-judgmental information on abortion and reproductive health 🔴 Expand access to contraception and comprehensive sexuality education to support informed reproductive choices Safe abortion saves lives. It is healthcare, a human rights issue and a matter of justice. Read the full Joint CSO Statement — reproductiverights.org/news/… #sep28 #isad

Most people will never sit in all these rooms in one week: Church. Legal & policy spaces. Medical spaces. But this is what systems change actually looks like. 🧵👇🏽
