My House, Dunsinane
Watching Elizabeth Holmes spend her final days before going to jail speed-running the creation of Theranos 2.0 kind of redeemed for me the idea that the Empire would just make a second Death Star.

Almost every Teach First teacher I've worked with has been really good, hard-working, smart and capable.
I find it interesting that “Teach First” teachers have historically been less likely to remain in teaching after completing the programme than teachers entering via other routes. What a success that programme seems to have been - yet some are BIG voices in education? 😶‍🌫️

I could talk at length about why "family TV time" was important to children, as OP says a window into the adult world, into so many different professions, food, nature etc. Now you can just watch endless niche content alone in your room.

Patrick Stewart was, like many of the greatest British artists of the 20th Century, a working class boy who became a world-class artist thanks to a public arts education made possible by Post War social democracy. He never forgot it.

I presume Daniel also has a plan for where the 50% increase in teachers is coming from that you would need to move from 30 in a class to 20. Not to mention the extra classrooms.
Schools and colleges are running on empty, but 20 is the magic number to #SaveEducation. 1. Class sizes of 20 We have a declining pupil roll, yet some of the largest class sizes in Europe, with 1 million children taught in classes of 31 or more. Class sizes of 20 is the European average. Smaller classes would equal greater inclusion. 2. 20% PPA We have an epidemic of teachers, particularly mothers , dropping to 0.8 so they can do their planning and preparation on their day off and still have some of their weekend. Going part-time to work full-time. 20% PPA would end this inequality. 3. 20% funding uplift for funding restoration. To get education funding back to the OECD average (5% of GDP), comparable with other developed countries, would require a 20% uplift. Keeping the £3.3bn saving from the Teachers’ Pension Scheme in education, instead of the treasury clawing it back, would take us two-thirds of the way there. 4. 20% pay rise for pay restoration Although pay has begun to rise relative to average earnings from its low point in 2022, we are still a long way from restoring pay to 2010 levels. Getting pay back to that level would require a 20% rise.

Man who has never encountered politeness theory
Why do people serving in shops, cafes nowadays often add "today" onto their questions? eg. "Would you like milk, today?". How does the word "today" help? Isn't it obvious that if I want milk I'd like it "today"? How would they respond if I said "No, I'd like it a week on Tuesday please."

Great opening but I'm going to push back on "the clocks were striking thirteen." Many readers will find this confusing. Do you want me to add a clarification like "because it was the future"?

In Spain they have this
Why are coffee shops only a daytime thing? I genuinely wish there were coffee shops open until midnight where people could hang out, meet strangers, play board games, and have actual conversations. Basically the social atmosphere of a bar, but without the alcohol, loud music, or drunk people. Is that too much to ask?

Saw two former students recently. One got top A-Levels and a place in medical school and is now a surgeon. Another was kindofa mess when she left school, but has turned it round and is now a qualified SEND teacher. Not everyone reaches their potential by 18.

It’s actually crazy how you grow up thinking home-cooked meals every day are just normal, then get older and realise how much time and effort it took your Mom to make that happen and how lucky you were to have that.

Oracy: a tale of three students. Harry is a boisterous, noisy lad but he's actually smart and perceptive when he chooses to "lock in". Last year I asked Year 9 why they thought Orwell used animals to write about politics. Harry offered a two-word answer. "They're innocent." 1/

And that should also be OK. The world is not wanting for big talkers or people giving presentations. Being quietly competent is a perfectly valid way of getting through life. Schools shouldn't default to rewarding extroversion. 5/

Which of these students, each using "oracy" in a way that works for them, will be rewarded under an oracy assessment framework? I don't know. 6/6
