Professor of Cancer Epidemiology, UCL. Research focus on improving the diagnostic process and outcomes for cancer patients. Ts own views; RTs views of others
1/12 With colleagues in 14 jurisdictions in 6 countries we have just published a study on the predictors and consequences of cancer diagnosis within 30 days after an emergency hospital admission (=emergency presentation) in @TheLancetOncolthelancet.com/pdfs/journals/… A🧵:
From measurement to improvement: new evidence on reducing emergency cancer diagnoses 🎯
Nearly 25% of cancer patients are diagnosed in emergency settings, and these patients face significantly worse outcomes, even after accounting for disease stage.
A new editorial by @glyratzopoulos and colleagues discuss this finding and present a new taxonomy of evidence on diagnosis of cancer as an emergency

Nonspecific symptoms pose a diagnostic challenge to primary care cancer diagnosis and can result in repeat pre-diagnostic GP presentations. New interventions are needed to help pick up these cancers earlier. @drtomround#RCGPAC2024@GLyratzopoulos
3/3 A third of EP patients were previously referred urgently; faster specialist assessment may have resulted in non-EP diagnosis in some. EP patients who were also emergency-referred had 9-fold higher mortality within a month post-diagnosis, compared to non-EP patients @CRUKHCPs

Patients with as-yet-undetected cancer start using GP healthcare more several months before cancer diagnosis and blood tests may help to diagnose them earlier. @DrMeenaRafiq presents work from UK and Australia @CRUKHCPs#CRUKEDConference24@UCL_BSH @VCCCAlliance
Working with collaborators we looked at #patients who were diagnosed with a #Cancer diagnosis emergently - i.e. either in the #ED or the inpatient wards. Typically you do not expect to receive a cancer diagnosis in the ED or as an inpatient. IF that happens, it is likely the dx
