In new study, I have analyzed correlation between SARS-CoV-2 & animal genetic material in full set of environmental samples from Huanan Seafood Market. biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/… Analysis clarifies what sequencing these samples can & cannot tell us about early outbreak at market.

A great thread clarifying some (poorly reported imo) claims about raccoon-dog origins.
Replying to @jbloom_lab
The sample that has attracted the most attention is the mostly light green pie circle, for which the dominant mtDNA is from a raccoon dog. This has attracted attention because raccoon dogs are one of several species known to be susceptible to SARS2.

In my mind, the lab leak hypothesis should be a warning case study in how hypotheses about a high-uncertainty event can arbitrarily align with political orientations early on, and have massive negative repercussions later in how we objectively weigh evidence and discuss things.

This is a thoughtful, enjoyable essay on why we should ditch peer review entirely by @a_m_mastroianni. Peer review is an outrageously expensive recent intervention in the scientific system. Does it help make science better? Not for the cost. experimentalhistory.substack…

If we can't tell whether or not the pandemic began from a lab leak, maybe we should stop funding and promoting virus hunting + engineering research under lax oversight and in labs that cannot be investigated?
Replying to @Ayjchan
Looking at the big picture, the type of work - virus hunting followed by infection studies & genetic engineering - was and continues to be endorsed by numerous virologists in the US and internationally. The NIH funded these projects including by the Wuhan scientists.

It’s time for a respectful, evidence-based, longform debate on #COVID19 origins. I propose @lexfridman to host. @Ayjchan & @jbloom_lab vs. Bob Garry & @MichaelWorobey. Both sides can present evidence and share relevant studies in the show notes.

How about rather than charging people for blue checkmarks, we make them pre-register their prediction takes with a fixed end date, and fade their checkmarks proportionally to their prediction accuracy.

Some preliminary comments from me, as a science journalist. First: This is serious business. These authors are claiming to have found fingerprints left in SARS-CoV-2 left by stitching together the parts that allegedly went to making it. If true...

Can't two things be true of scientific publishing? (1) It isn't great that journal names are the currency of research. (2) Variance in the quality of research, combined with the fact that there are too many papers, means we need some (even imperfect) signal of quality.

Me to 6yo: See it’s super cool b/c like, measured in radians, noon is approximately 2*π=6.2! . 6yo: but wouldn’t it be easier to just say 6*2=12? Indeed, knowledge is not always power 🤦‍♀️
