🚨 SCAM ALERT: Hamilton Police Warn Seniors of New Senior Scam
Hamilton Police detectives in our Financial Crimes and Crimes Against Seniors Unit have received multiple reports over the past week of a scam targeting seniors.
Here’s how it works:
📞 Step 1: You receive a call from someone claiming to represent your phone or internet provider, offering you a discount you’ve supposedly earned.
🏦 Step 2: A second caller, claiming to be from your bank, tells you your account has been compromised.
💳 Step 3: The caller arranges for a courier to pick up your bank cards and convinces you to share your PIN.
⚠️ KNOW THE RED FLAGS:
-Never share your PIN, passwords or banking information over the phone.
Don’t assume a caller is legitimate just because they know your personal information. Your information may have been obtained through a data breach, mail theft or other means.
-Be suspicious of anyone offering to send a courier to collect your bank cards or banking documents. Your bank will not send a courier to collect your bank cards or PIN.
-When in doubt, hang up. Contact your bank or service provider using a verified phone number, or visit a branch in person.
📢 Received a suspicious call? Report it to Hamilton Police.
We can provide advice, document the incident and investigate these reports to help prevent others from becoming victims.
Talk to your loved ones, especially older family members, about this scam. Sharing this warning could help protect someone from financial loss.
